Orange County sheriff's deputy crashes into tree

Deputy extricated from vehicle, taken to hospital

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – An Orange County sheriff's deputy was extricated from his cruiser after he crashed into a tree while responding to a call, officials said.

The crash happened around 1:45 a.m. Wednesday near state roads 535 and 429.

According to the Orange County Sheriff's Office, another deputy was monitoring traffic off Avalon Road when three vehicles were spotted traveling at a high rate of speed.  One of the drivers lost control and crashed, and multiple people fled from the car, deputies said.

The other two cars fled, with one returning a short time later, said deputies, who added that Vanessa Basualdo, 21, was arrested.

The deputy who witnessed the crash called for additional help, and a sheriff's deputy headed to the scene crashed into a tree, the Sheriff's Office said.  The deputy was extricated from his cruiser and taken to a hospital in stable condition, officials said.

No other details were released.
