Deputies: Remains to be examined, identified

MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. – The Brevard County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a fisherman found what appeared to be skeletal remains.

The remains were found at Waterway Park in Merritt Island in a shallow area of water of the Indian River, deputies said.

Homicide agents along with the Medical Examiner's Office, members of the crime scene unit and the dive team arrived at the scene, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office said the remains were transported to the Medical Examiner's Office for examination and identification.

Deputies said on Wednesday the bones were human remains but they have not been identified.

A vehicle was pulled from the Indian River on Wednesday, but it's not known if it's connected to the case.

The investigation is ongoing.
