The Florida Highway Patrol said Phil Rutkowski, 66, and Judith Rutkowski, 69, of Smithville, Missouri, died in the crash, which happened around 9:30 p.m. on I-4 at mile marker 116 near DeLand.

According to the FHP, Timothy Engels, 44, of DeBary, was driving the pickup westbound on I-4 when he made an abrupt lane change and lost control of the truck.  The pickup traveled into the median and struck a guardrail, vaulting into the eastbound lanes and landing on top of the SUV, troopers said.

Phil Rutkowski died at the scene, and Judith Rutkowski was taken to Halifax Medical Center and later died, troopers said.

Engels and his passenger, a 29-year-old Sanford man, suffered serious injuries in the crash and were taken to Halifax Medical Center, the FHP said.  They were not wearing seat belts, according to the FHP.

Charges are pending against Engels, the FHP reported.

I-4 was closed in the area through the night, and traffic was rerouted onto the shoulder while troopers investigated the crash.  The interstate reopened around 4:30 a.m. Friday.
