SeaWorld rescues manatee mother, calf

Rescue of the duo on Mother's Day

ORLANDO, Fla. – This past Mother's Day SeaWorld Orlando Rescue Team rescued a distressed mother manatee and her nursing calf near Satellite Beach.

The mother had a collapsed lung which made it hard for her to float.  SeaWorld gave her a "manatee wetsuit" that allowed her to have better buoyancy.

The mother weighs 1,070 pounds and is estimated to be 10 years old. Her injuries were caused by a watercraft strike.

The calf was not injured in any way but is still nursing and dependent on its mother. It is important that the two remain together.

SeaWorld Rescue Team says its goal is to return every manatee back to its natural environment once it is strong enough to survive on its own.
