SARASOTA, Fla. – Spilled fuel has shut down Interstate 75, one of Florida's busiest highways, at mile marker 179 Toledo Blade Boulevard in Sarasota County.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the accident occurred at 5 a.m. Sunday, closing the southbound lanes to traffic.

Southbound; traffic is being rerouted at exit 179 Toledo Blade Boulevard to southbound US 41 to Midway Boulevard to Kings Highway. Traffic can re-enter I-75 southbound at Kings Highway mile maker 170, troopers said.

It could take a few hours to get the highway reopened; the fuel leak has been contained and crews are working on the fuel cleanup process.

The northbound side of I-75 remains open.
