Man in Orange County fatal ax 'sneak attack' in custody

Victim dies after being attacked with ax

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – A man is dead after Orange County deputies say he was hit with an ax on Friday afternoon in what neighbors are calling a sneak attack.

The incident was reported as an aggravated battery near South Westmoreland Drive and 22nd Street in Orange County at 3 p.m.

Authorities were searching for Joseph Robinson, 48, by air and on foot with dozens of officers.

Deputies said the victim was upset with Robinson over some money and scratch-off lottery tickets, and when the victim turned around, Robinson hit him several times in the head with an ax.

Robinson then ran, setting off an all-out man-hunt. Helicopters and officers searched the area for hours before finding Robinson.

The man died after being taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center as a trauma alert, deputies said. The Orange County Sheriff's Office identified the victim as John Stubbs, 69. Stubbs has 11 children and lost his wife nine months ago.

Robinson was in custody Friday night, deputies said.
