MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Melbourne Police Department is investigating a shooting at the Delavana Apartments Friday night, police said.

Police said they received calls about the sound of gunshots being heard in the area just after 8:30 p.m.

Officers spoke to a witness who said they saw a man who appeared to have just been shot leaving the area on foot, police said. Another witness told police that a bullet had gone through her window.

Police responded to the 1400 block of Avocado Avenue and found evidence of the shooting, but said they were unable to find the man.

Melbourne police, with the assistance of the Brevard County Sheriff's Office's aviation unit, conducted a thorough search of the area. Officers said that nearly half an hour into the search, they received word that the man had walked to his home, which was nearly two miles away.

Officers located the victim and found that he had been shot in the abdomen several times, police said.

The victim told police that he was taking a short cut through the apartments on his way home when a man wearing a hooded jacket approached him and started shooting, Melbourne police said. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he received emergency medical surgery.

Police said they do not have any suspect information yet, but asked anyone with information to call the MPD at 321-608-6731.
