Man avoiding arrest barricades himself in Winter Garden home, deputies say

Children inside home during hourslong standoff

Eddie Lewis Darby Jr. is accused of barricading himself in a Winter Garden home for several hours.

WINTER GARDEN, Fla. – A man barricaded himself inside a Winter Garden home for several hours Monday morning in an attempt to evade members of the fugitive squad who were attempting to serve a warrant, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies had been attempting to locate Eddie Lewis Darby Jr. after he failed to show up for a sentencing hearing in March on charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of cocaine. He was facing up to 15 years on those charges.

The task force with assistance from the Winter Garden Police Department tracked Darby to a home on Lincoln Terrace around 6 a.m. Deputies said Darby's two stepchildren, a 7-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl, and his 1-year-old biological daughter were inside the home, and Darby refused to come outside.

The SWAT team arrived at around 9 a.m. and Darby peacefully surrendered about six hours later, authorities said.

No one was injured during the incident. It's unknown if Darby was armed.

Records show that Darby has nearly two dozens convictions including, aggravated assault, burglary, grand theft and drug possession.
