Car, structures struck by lightning in Brevard County, fire officials say

Minor injuries reported after incidents on I-95

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – Lightning struck a car and nearly struck a motorcycle on I-95, along with multiple structures and trees, Brevard County Fire Rescue personnel said.

Preliminary numbers show that approximately eight structures were struck or nearly struck by lightning with minor damage reported, officials said. There were approximately five tree fires.

Personnel from Brevard County Fire Rescue and the Titusville Fire Department went to I-95 near mile markers 225 northbound and 220 southbound for a car struck by lightning and a near strike on a motorcyclist, officials said.

Both were transported to the hospital and minor injures were reported. Officials said the vehicle's airbags deployed as a result of being struck.

A brush fire caused by lighting was reported on Hunters Lane in north Merritt Island, officials said. The homeowner had the fire under control and Fire Rescue personnel were at the scene.

Fire officials said lightning struck a home on Spring Lake Drive in Suntree, damaging part of the roof. Lightning also struck a home in Viera. Firefighters told News 6 they spent much of the evening bouncing all over because of the abundance of incidents. ​
