Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings urges drivers to watch out for kids

Message comes after 2 kids hit crossing street

In light of the recent accidents involving children crossing the street, Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings is asking drivers to be more cautious.

In a video posted Tuesday, Demings urges drivers to pay attention to crossing guards while driving in school zones.

"They fly through here. Yeah. This is supposed to be a 20 mph speed limit and they're going about 40," said Josephine Rivers, a 12-year veteran crossing guard. "We've got kids to help to be safe and then people they just don't care."

"Within the last few days we've had two children hit by cars when they were crossing the road. Fortunately they were not badly injured."

In order to avoid any more accidents like this, Demings wants drivers to do one of three things.

1. Pay attention to crossing guards.

2. Slow down.

3. Watch carefully as children are crossing the roadways.
