During an interview with Espinoza about the attack, he told investigators, “I got my (expletive) beat last week by those girls,” adding that he had been “in the park to smoke a joint” when he saw the women who attacked him, police said.

Espinoza then told police he took out a pocket knife to attack the women, according to detectives.

Investigators said they then spoke with the victims, who explained that Espinoza had threatened them with a knife before hitting one of the women with the shovel.

Police said that while taking Espinoza to the hospital for an evaluation, he stated, “Why didn’t you let me hit her?”

Espinoza faces charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, resisting an officer without violence, battery and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He is held on bond of $27,500.
