Disney volunteers help get results for veterans ahead of the holidays

Disney decked out Orlando Fisher House for veterans

ORLANDO, Fla. – It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at the Orlando Fisher House in Lake Nona.

From Christmas trees to wreaths, all of it was donated by Walt Disney World.

“As a veteran and being part of Disney, there’s a sense of fulfillment of being part of something larger than yourself,” U.S. Navy Veteran Cappy Surette said.

Surette is with SALUTE Walt Disney World and said volunteers worked for hours setting up lights and decorations at the Orlando Fisher House as part of Veterans and Military Families Month.

Surette said this is a tradition that is close to their hearts.

“Walt Disney Company has had a long and enduring admiration for military service beginning with our founder 100 years ago and that has continued throughout the history of our company all the way to today,” Surette said.

The Orlando Fisher House is a place where military and veterans’ families can stay at no cost while a loved one is receiving medical treatment at the hospital.

U.S. Army Veteran and cancer survivor, Charles Garris, is staying at the Orlando Fisher House for the next few days as he recovers from several procedures.

“I think it’s awesome! The staff here is tremendous,” Garris said.

George Denby is the manager at the Orlando Fisher House and is also a U.S. Air Force Veteran. He explained just how much this means to families.

“To have a little bit of Disney magic here and help them out and help brighten their day it just means the world to them. They can come after visiting with their loved ones all day they can come to our safe space,” Denby said.

Workers with Walt Disney World said they are going to continue getting results for veterans and will be donating $25,000 to the Orlando Fisher House.
