80-year-old man cut off from Volusia street after Hurricane Milton destroys road

Portions of Monastery Road collapsed as News 6 visited after the storm

ORANGE CITY, Fla. – News 6 traffic safety expert Trooper Steve drove to Orange City on Thursday to survey damage wrought by Hurricane Milton.

Along Monastery Road, he found huge portions of the roadway collapsed.

“Just a little information for you here,” he said. “There has never been a lake here. There has never been a river here. This was solid ground and solid roadway. And it has been completely washed out.”

Between the washed-out portions of the road was a driveway leading to the home of an 80-year-old man, whom Trooper Steve said was stuck thanks to the collapsed street.

According to Trooper Steve, the man was OK, and neighbors and first responders were able to get to him, though he refused to leave his home.

“(He’s) just not able to drive anywhere or get his vehicles out,” Trooper Steve explained. “No one can really get any vehicles to him right now. It’s just insane.”

Milton struck Florida’s Gulf Coast near Sarasota on Wednesday night as a Category 3 hurricane.

From there, Milton moved inland through Central Florida, weakening to Category 1 before heading out into the Atlantic.

However, the storm left plenty of damage and flooding in its wake, ruining many roads throughout Volusia County.
