Man steals rings from one Florida girlfriend to propose to his other girlfriend, deputies say
VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – Volusia County deputies are looking for a man who gave both women he was dating a fake name, stole from them and took rings from one of his girlfriends to propose to his other girlfriend. The love triangle began to unravel earlier this year when an Orange City woman realized her boyfriend was engaged to another woman who lives in Orlando. Deputies said all in all, $6,270 worth of jewelry was stolen from the Orange City girlfriend. He’s wanted on a felony grand theft charge out of Volusia County as well as the hit-and-run warrant out of Oregon. Anyone with information about Davis’ whereabouts is asked to call the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office at 386-668-3830 and ask for Detective Wheeler.
29-year-old DeLand driver killed in Orange City crash
ORANGE CITY, Fla. – The driver of a pickup truck died in a single-vehicle crash in Orange City early Sunday. Orange City police said the crash took place shortly before 1 a.m. near Veterans Memorial Parkway and Monastery Avenue. The driver, identified as 29-year-old Hayden Hatcher, of DeLand, died at the scene, officials said in the release. The roadway was shut down for several hours after the crash, according to police. Orange City police said they’re still investigating the crash and anyone with information is asked to call 386-775-5474.
Free Wheelie: Manatee returns to Blue Spring without tire around waist
ORANGE CITY, Fla. – A manatee that a year ago was seen swimming around Blue Spring State Park with a bicycle tire cinching its waist has returned to the crystal clear waters free of the trap. Officials from Save the Manatee Club said Friday they don’t know how the manatee managed to shake the tire lose but they mentioned that Wheelie, as the manatee was called by the public, was struck by a boat’s propeller in February and that strike cut and weakened the tire. Also called Schwinn by researchers, the manatee now has deep scars around its midsection where the bike tire was once entangled. Wheelie the manatee now has scars from where a bike tire was stuck around its waist. Save the Manatee Club manatee research associate Cora Berchem first spotted Wheelie on Wednesday on an above-water livestreaming webcam.
Video: Woman upset about refund uses crowbar to steal money from Spectrum store, police say
ORANGE CITY, Fla. – A woman who was upset that employees at a Spectrum store wouldn’t give her a cash refund brought a crowbar into the building, pried open a register and took the money herself, according to the Orange City Police Department. On the third time she entered the store, police said she had a crowbar in her hand and went straight for a register while yelling, “Where’s my money? An employee who captured Serraty’s license plate and surveillance video helped authorities locate Serraty at her home, records show.

Arrest made in random face-slashing attack that left teen injured in Orange City
ORANGE CITY, Fla. – A man accused of slashing a teen’s face in a random attack showed up drunk to a family friend’s house after the fact and admitted that he hid in the bushes and attacked someone, according to the Orange City Police Department. Orange City Police gave News 6 video showing People’s leaving the park in a black SUV shortly after the incident they said. According to the report, Peoples said he was “probably” at the crime scene but didn’t admit to slashing the boy’s face. Court records show Peoples has been arrested before on prior charges like aggravated assault, driving without a license and more.
Teen’s face slashed in apparent random attack in Orange City

Driver killed in crash with dump truck in Orange City
ORANGE CITY, Fla. – The driver of a car was killed in a crash with a dump truck in Orange City, according to police. The fatal wreck was reported at 1:20 p.m. at North Volusia and East Michigan avenues. Orange City police said Aurelia Henderson, 62, of Orange City, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the dump truck, which overturned in the crash, was taken to DeLand Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. North Volusia Avenue was shut down at Minnesota Avenue for about three hours due to the investigation.
Orange City pastor accused of possessing child pornography
VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – An Orange City pastor was arrested at his home after authorities found child pornography there, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Agents said they learned that someone at 33-year-old Bryan Scott Carrejo’s Sandy Pine Drive home was offering to share child pornography online so they executed a search warrant and located files showing children as young as 8 years old. Carrejo was arrested Wednesday on five counts of possession of sexual performance by a child. He’s being held without bond at the Volusia County Jail. Since Carrejo is a pastor at Victory Chapel in Orange City, authorities are asking anyone who may have additional information about the case to call them at 407-245-0888.

Residents continue to rely on drive-thru food pantries months after being furloughed
OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, there has been a massive need for food assistance in Central Florida. It was a similar scene in Osceola County, where Advance Senior Center and Second Harvest Food Bank hosted a drive-thru food pantry. Since mid-March, Second Harvest Food Bank has provided 22 million meals and a new study shows they are seeing nearly 50% more people in Central Florida who are hungry. Orange City sergeant hits, kills woman while heading to emergency call, FHP says
ORANGE CITY, Fla. – An Orange City police sergeant heading to an emergency struck and killed a woman who was crossing a Volusia County road, the Florida Highway Patrol said. The fatal crash was reported at 12:45 a.m. Monday near Enterprise Road and Grand Plaza Drive. It is safer to walk at a crosswalk or an intersection,” FHP Lt. Kim Montes said. The woman, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene, the FHP said. Orange City police said Herzog was headed to a disturbance involving several people, including someone who was armed with a shotgun.
Teens lead authorities on chase through Volusia County after attempted burglary, police say
According to a news release, Orange City Police Sergeant Jason Ward observed three subjects attempting to break into the store. Once the subjects noticed law enforcement vehicles, they got into a Black Nissan Altima and fled the scene driving southbound on North Volusia Avenue. Orange City Police Officers with the assistance of the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office successfully deployed spike strips near the intersection of Enterprise Road and South Volusia Avenue. The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office set up a perimeter and deployed a police K-9, a news release said. “The investigation also revealed the Nissan Altima was reported stolen out of Orange County on May 18,” officials said.
Orange City cancels summer fireworks show, donates money to food pantry
ORANGE CITY, Fla. – The Orange City Council voted Tuesday to cancel its Fireworks and Fun independence event this summer, citing concerns over the coronavirus pandemic. Fireworks and Fun had been scheduled for June 27. The city said it will donate $10,000, a large portion of the money it will save by not hosting the event, to the Orange City United Methodist Church for its daily food pantry to serve the community. “It wasn’t easy to cancel our annual fireworks; it’s such a great time for everyone, but there isn’t a safe way to do it this year," Mayor Gary Blair said. The church gives away groceries, one bag per family per week, Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to noon and every third Saturday.
Detectives seek tips in suspicious death of Orange City man
ORANGE CITY, Fla. – Detectives are investigating a suspicious death after a body was discovered Thursday night in the Orange City area, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said. According to a news release, deputies responded to the area of Foothill Farms Road around 8:15 p.m., where they discovered the body of 52-year-old Chris Kimmel, of Orange City. The Sheriff’s office said the Major Case Unit is leading the investigation into Kimmel’s death, and anyone with information is asked to call 386-254-1537. Man, woman killed in DeBary RV fire
ORANGE CITY, Fla. – A man and woman were killed early Monday in an RV fire in DeBary, officials said. The double fatal fire was reported at 4:17 a.m. at the Highbanks Marina & Camp Resort at 488 W. Highbanks Road. According to Volusia County fire officials, Allan Gower, 72, and Teresa Gower, 69, Kentucky residents who often spend the winter months in DeBary, were pulled from the RV and taken to area hospitals. Allan Gower was taken to Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford, and Teresa Gower was taken to AdventHealth Fish Memorial in Orange City. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the state Bureau of Fire, Arson and Explosives.
Missing DeBary man with dementia found safe in Jacksonville
DeBARY, Fla. – An 86-year-old DeBary man with dementia who went missing Saturday night has been found safe in Jacksonville, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office. Officials said a statewide Silver Alert was activated for William Eugene Hamilton, 86, who left his home in the 500 block of Quail Down Drive at about 12:20 p.m. Saturday. Wheelie! Manatee with tire stuck around belly spotted again at state park
ORANGE CITY, Fla. – A manatee with a bicycle tire wrapped around its stomach was spotted again Thursday at Blue Spring State Park in Orange City. The manatee, nicknamed Wheelie, was first seen at the park last month. A group of wildlife experts worked for days to catch the manatee but were not successful. The manatee was spotted Thursday on the Save the Manatee camera at Blue Spring State Park, and the sea cow still had the tire around its belly. Officials with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission say workers have been made aware and are monitoring the situation.
Orange City police officer dies unexpectedly, officials say
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Officials with the Orange City Police Department said one of their sergeants died Tuesday after her body was found at a Daytona Beach splash park. Orange City Police Chief Wayne Miller said in a statement Sgt. SeaWorld returns rehabilitated manatees to national park
ORLANDO, Fla. – SeaWorld Orlando's animal rescue team, along with several other stranding agencies, returned three manatees to the waters of Blue Spring Park, a designated manatee sanctuary, in Orange City Monday. A sub-adult female and two sub-adult males were returned after receiving rehabilitation at SeaWorld Orlando for the last few months. The manatees were rescued between Dec. 18 and Jan. 5 from the St. Johns River in Jacksonville due to cold stress. SeaWorld Orlando has rescued three manatees in 2014 so far and returned four back to their natural environment. SeaWorld animal experts have helped more than 23,000 animals in the last four decades.
