The FHP said a marked Orange City Police Department sport utility vehicle was traveling south on U.S. 17-92 in the inside lane and began to merge in the left turn lane to make a left turn onto eastbound Enterprise Road. The woman was attempting to cross the roadway, but was not in a crosswalk, and walked into the path of the SUV, according to an FHP crash report.
The right front of the police cruiser collided with the woman, who was killed, troopers said.
The officer, a 42-year-old Orange City man who was on duty at the time of the wreck, was not injured, according to the crash report.
Orange City police said the officer is currently not working and his “mental and emotional state will be checked prior to him returning to work.”
U.S. 17-92 was closed in the area, but the road was reopened before 10 a.m. Monday.
No other details about the driver have been released.
Please be advised, 17/92 Southbound at Enterprise Rd is back open. Thank you for your patience.
