SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. – The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is proposing a series of safety and infrastructure improvements along a roughly 2-mile stretch of State Road 434 in Seminole County.
The project spans approximately 2.09 miles, running from east of U.S. 17-92 to State Road 419. The corridor passes through the cities of Casselberry, Longwood, and Winter Springs.

Beyond repaving the road with a rehabilitated asphalt surface, the project aims to enhance both safety and traffic operations along the corridor. One of the more significant changes involves replacing a portion of the existing two-way center turn lane with a raised median and directional openings between Sheoah Boulevard and Charles Street.
Full median openings would be placed at Sherry Avenue and Hacienda Drive. Directional median openings are proposed at three additional locations: Bombay Avenue, Fairfax Avenue, and Costa Rica Drive.
Pedestrian safety is also a priority in the proposal. The project would reconstruct sidewalk curb ramps to meet current Americans with Disabilities Act standards, restore pedestrian railing at the Sheoah Boulevard intersection, and refresh all crosswalks along the corridor.
Traffic signal upgrades are also on the table. The existing signals at Fountaintree Drive/Sunshadow Drive and at Winter Park Drive would be fully reconstructed and upgraded. Additional signal enhancements are planned at other existing signals throughout the corridor.
Design of the project is expected to be completed in Fall 2027 at a cost of $1.6 million. Construction is estimated to cost $10.4 million and is expected to be funded by early 2028.
FDOT will hold an open house to discuss the project on Thursday from 5:30 - 7 p.m. at the Longwood Community Building, located at 200 W. Warren Ave.
