Sharon Myers, 54, was sentenced to 10 years for manslaughter in a 2008 plot to kill her husband.

MELBOURNE, Fla. – A Melbourne woman was convicted last week after a jury found that she directed a plot to kill her husband at their Merritt Island home just over 10 years ago, according to court records.

Sharon Myers, 54, was sentenced to 10 years in prison  Thursday for her role in the plot after being found guilty of manslaughter in May of this year, according to News 6 partner Florida Today.

Her son, Darryl Kenney, was found guilty of first-degree premeditated murder in October 2010. He and another accomplice, Rubin Nero, were sentenced to life in prison.

Investigators said that Myers lied to her son about being abused by her husband, Gary Kenney. She wrote letters to Darryl while he was in prison asking for help in killing his father, and Darryl enlisted Nero, a fellow inmate, for help.

When both were released, Nero assisted Darryl in stealing guns from his grandparents, according to court records.

Gary Kenney was found dead June 16, 2018, in the family's Venetian Way apartment.

Brevard County Sheriff's Office detectives said Myers directed her daughter to leave the apartment, alerting her that the murder was about to take place. Myers then met up with her son and daughter at Merritt Square Mall, where Darryl told her that he had killed his father.

Myers then instructed her son to remove the body from the apartment, but when he returned deputies were already at the scene to investigate the stolen guns.

During that investigation, Gary Kenney was found dead in the family's Venetian Way apartment. He had several gunshot wounds and multiple lacerations to his wrists and body, according to investigators.

Investigators also found that immediately after the murder, Myers contacted her husband's employer to ask how she would collect on his life insurance.

Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey took to Facebook after the sentencing to decry the outcome.

"While I have absolute faith in our criminal justice system and truly respect the court’s decision, I personally believe she deserved to spend her entire life behind bars as her actions were cold, calculated, and evil!! In fact, the level of depravity in this case is appalling!!" Ivey wrote.
