TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A proposed law that would penalize left-lane driving in Florida is ready to be heard in the full state Senate.

SB 258, Interstate Safety, passed its final committee Thursday. It would see drivers fined as much as $158 for using the leftmost travel lane for purposes other than passing other drivers — that is, if the violation occurs on a roadway with a speed limit of at least 65 mph and with at least two lanes in each direction.

The bill’s sponsor, Republican state Sen. Keith Perry, said his goal is to prevent people from using the right lane to pass slower traffic.

“In 2023 alone, there were 4,027 violations as a direct violation of passing on the right,” Perry said.

HB 317, a similar bill, is now ready for a full vote in the state House.
