With just 12 hours’ notice, a handful of volunteers and a few thousand dollars’ worth of supplies, outreach groups from Alive Church in Orlando and Gainesville made the journey to Southwest Florida to help Hurricane Ian victims.
‘It’s human nature to help others,’ GoFundMe says 2020 is most charitable year
Needless to say, 2020 was a tough year for most but according to crowd fundraising website GoFundMe its donations data can restore a bit of faith in humanity. Floyd’s brother Philonise Floyd, started a memorial fund to provide for costs including holding a funeral for Floyd, burying him, and providing mental and grief counseling for Floyd’s family. Other top causes include Frontline Responders Fund, Justice for Breonna Taylor and Navajo & Hopi Families COVID-19 Relief Fund. Nearly 70% of all donations in 2020 were less than $50, according to GoFundMe. Despite the economic crisis plaguing much of the U.S. and the globe, GoFundMe was able to bring in over 150 million donations.
Caribe Royale Orlando donates furniture to Orlando charity
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Trucks lined outside Tower three at Caribe Royale Orlando Thursday as crews with Mustard Seed of Central Florida collected donated furniture. Items donated today include mattresses, dressers, box springs and will go toward helping Mustard Seed of Central Florida, the only area clothing and furniture bank, which helps people starting over furnish up to an entire home. “They’re going to donate 20 rooms worth of furniture,” Alexi Altizer with Mustard Seed of Central Florida said. “This is the first area hotel since March that’s been able to donate furniture to us.”The donation comes as area tourism continues to try to recover during the pandemic. These ‘teddy bear toss’ videos will warm your heart
Once the home team scores its first goal of the game, fans unleash the teddy bears by throwing them over the glass and onto the ice. If it's a packed game and fans know about the toss, teddy bears will fly onto the ice for several minutes. The teddy bear toss has become so popular in some areas, that world records have been broken. The previous record for the Teddy Bear Toss was set in 2015 by fans of the Calgary Hitmen with 28,815 stuffed animals. The Hershey Bears collected 25,017 stuffed animals at their 2017 Teddy Bear Toss, but absolutely crushed their record with 34,798 stuffed animals in 2018.
Great Big Backpack Build underway despite lower donations due to virus
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. Volunteers spent their Thursday morning stuffing backpacks for a great cause. More than 12,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to be distributed to students in underserved areas. Donated school supplies like notebook paper, pencils, and crayons are packed into backpacks to help students in underserved areas across Orange County. Were very grateful.The Great Big Backpack Build is an annual event hosted by A Gift For Teaching. Typically loud and bustling with hundreds of people stuffing backpacks, the event would normally last a day.
