Jose Cruz Noguez, 47, of Mexicali, was arrested Monday night as he crossed into the United States at the Calexico Port of Entry. He appeared Tuesday in federal court in El Centro and faces conspiracy and smuggling charges involving serious injury or placing lives in danger, according to a statement from the U.S. attorney's office. Cruz was taken into custody after another suspected smuggler was arrested at a California border station two weeks after the crash.

The youngest injured was a 15-year-old girl whose name and nationality were undetermined, according to California Highway Patrol. The Guatemala City woman lost consciousness. The Border Patrol said surveillance video showed the Expedition and a Chevrolet Suburban drive through an opening in the border wall about 30 miles (48 kilometers) east of the crash.

Another person died at a hospital, California Highway Patrol Chief Omar Watson said. Watson said the SUV only had front seats — the middle and back seats had been removed. AdMacario Mora, a spokesman for Customs and Border Protection, said agents were not pursing the SUV at the time of the crash, which was initially rumored. “It was an unusual number of people in an SUV, but we don’t know who they were,” Mora said. POLK COUNTY, Fla. Polk County deputies are looking for a vehicle that fled after fatally striking a woman whose body was later found in a nearby ditch, according to the sheriffs office. Deputies said the crash took place Tuesday evening on Combee Road in Lakeland, about 130 feet south of the intersection with Old Combee Road. Deputies said they believe the woman was walking north on the east side of Combee Road when she was hit. As the northbound Ford approached the intersection with Old Combee Road, the driver swerved off the road and hit the woman, who was believed to be about 50-60 years old, deputies said. The woman was then dragged by the vehicle before she ended up in the ditch, which deputies say is located about 100 feet from where she was hit.

The triple fatal wreck happened around 5:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-95 just north of State Road 407 near Titusville. The FHP said a 2004 Ford Expedition carrying four people was going north on I-95 when a Kia SUV entered the highway from State Road 407. The driver, a 40-year-old Vero Beach man, and two passengers, a 28-year-old Sebastian man and a 44-year-old Orlando woman, died in the crash, the FHP said.
