Melbourne police officer’s knee ‘crushed’ while being dragged by Lexus, officials say
MELBOURNE, Fla. – A Melbourne police officer’s knee was “crushed” when he was dragged by a suspect’s vehicle and then nearly run over Sunday near a Walmart, an arrest affidavit said. Gould tapped on the window of the Lexus, but Taranto initially did not respond, the affidavit stated. When Gould opened the car door asked the man to get out of the vehicle, Taranto put the car in reverse, dragging the officer, police said. The affidavit said Gould’s knee was “crushed” between two vehicles before he fell to the ground. Taranto was arrested and taken to Melbourne Regional Hospital, where police said he admitted to the incident.

18-year-old surfer bitten by shark in New Smyrna Beach
NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. - An 18-year-old man was bitten by a shark at New Smyrna Beach on Monday afternoon while he was surfing, according to the beach patrol. "When there's good waves, there's good waves. Coincidentally, his friend Jonathan was also with him at the time, and Jonathan had also been bitten by a shark several years ago. This is the second reported shark attack in Volusia County since Saturday, when a 49-year-old was bitten on the leg while boogie boarding. Shark bites surfer in New Smyrna Beach; 2nd since weekend
Shark Week got a bite in New Smyrna Beach when a a teenager was bitten on the hand on Monday. A shark bit a man on the hand Monday afternoon in New Smyrna Beach, making him the sixth person bitten by a shark in Volusia County this year, according to officials with Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue. Zipperer was the sixth person to be nipped by a shark in New Smyrna Beach, where all the bites have occurred this year, Malphurs said. Shark bites in Flagler County are much more rare, and none of the encounters near beaches in either county has been fatal. Volusia County consistently leads Florida and the nation in shark bites.
