Boeing pleads not guilty in case over deadly Max crashes

Boeing and the Justice Department opposed the request. Boeing's chief aerospace safety officer and lawyers for the company and the Justice Department sat just feet away but showed no reaction to any of the stories. The Justice Department investigated Boeing after the second Max crash and settled the case in January 2021. Naheed Noormohamed, who lost his father on the same flight, said the Justice Department had failed the families by not considering their pain. They want that so they can lobby the Justice Department to throw out the deal and prosecute the company.

Problem-plagued Boeing sets ambitious turnaround targets

Boeing said it expects to boost revenue to $100 billion and generate $10 billion in annual cash flow by 2025 or 2026. Two Max crashes that killed 346 people, production flaws with a bigger plane, the 787, bad military contracts and other missteps have left Boeing chasing its European rival Airbus for supremacy in aircraft manufacturing. Boeing last recorded $100 billion in revenue in 2018. Last week, Boeing reported a $3.3 billion third-quarter loss on disappointing revenue and huge charges for the government programs. Company officials said at the investor presentation that they can generate cash instead of burning more of it this year.

Boeing crashes: Passengers' families deemed crime victims

The judge said the next step is to decide what remedies the families should get for not being told of the talks with Boeing. The Justice Department, in explaining why it didn’t tell families about the negotiations, argued that the relatives are not crime victims. However, U.S. District Judge Reed O’Connor in Fort Worth, Texas, said the crashes were a foreseeable consequence of Boeing’s conspiracy, making the relatives representatives of crime victims. “In sum, but for Boeing’s criminal conspiracy to defraud the FAA, 346 people would not have lost their lives in the crashes,” he wrote. They were cleared to fly again after Boeing overhauled an automated flight-control system that activated erroneously in both crashes.

Boeing to resell some Max jets ordered by Chinese airlines

Boeing officials said Thursday they will find new buyers for some Boeing 737 Max jets that were built for Chinese airlines but can't be delivered because China's aviation regulator has not cleared the plane to fly after two deadly crashes. Boeing hopes the move will reduce its inventory of undelivered Max jets, which built up while the planes were grounded around the world. Arlington, Virginia-based Boeing had 290 undelivered 737s in inventory as of June 30, with about half of them earmarked for China, company officials said. In February, Chinese airlines ran flight tests. The importance of the Chinese market to Boeing was underscored in July, when China's three largest airlines ordered nearly 300 planes from its European rival Airbus.

American flight 718 carried 87 passengers on the 172-seat plane, and the return flight from LaGuardia Airport to Miami International Airport held 151 passengers, according to an airline spokeswoman. Brazil's Gol airlines operated the first passenger flight with a revamped Max on Dec. 9. Some relatives of people who died in the second crash, a Max operated by Ethiopian Airlines, contend that the plane is still unsafe.

Boeing Max returns to US skies with first passenger flight from Florida

MIAMI – American Airlines flew a Boeing 737 Max with paying passengers from Miami to New York on Tuesday, the plane’s first commercial flight in U.S. skies since it was grounded after two deadly crashes. Brazil's Gol airlines operated the first passenger flight with a revamped Max on Dec. 9. United Airlines plans to resume Max flights in February, and Southwest Airlines expects to follow in March. Reports by House and Senate committees faulted Boeing and the FAA for failures in the process of certifying the plane. Some relatives of people who died in the second crash, a Max operated by Ethiopian Airlines, contend that the plane is still unsafe.

'Wonder Woman 1984' debuts with pandemic-best $16.7M

This image released by Warner Bros. Entertainment shows Gal Gadot in a scene from "Wonder Woman 1984." “Wonder Woman 1984” grossed an additional $19.4 million in international markets where it began playing a week earlier. But WarnerMedia is counting on “Wonder Woman 1984” to matter more to HBO Max, which wobbled in its initial rollout. Warner Bros. nevertheless seized on the returns for “Wonder Woman 1984” as the best as could be expected, given the circumstances. Streaming numbers weren't provided for “Soul” or “Wonder Woman 1984.” WarnerMedia said nearly half of HBO Max’s subscribers watched “Wonder Woman 1984” on its first day on the streaming platform, though it didn't say how long constituted a watch.

Would you fly on it? Boeing 737 Max back in air 2 years after grounded by crashes

RIO DE JANEIRO – Commercial flights with Boeing 737 Max jetliners resumed Wednesday for the first time since they were grounded worldwide nearly two years ago following two deadly accidents. Customers will be able to exchange their tickets if they don’t want to fly on a 737 Max, a Gol spokesperson told The Associated Press in an email. Several passengers at Sao Paulo’s Guarulhos airport were surprised to learn they had traveled on a 737 Max aircraft, though it was marked on their ticket. Gol, the country’s largest airline with 36 million passengers annually, owns seven 737 Max aircraft, according to Cirium. The Boeing plane was grounded globally in March 2019, shortly after a 737 Max crashed in Ethiopia.

Waiting for passengers, American puts Boeing Max in the air

An American Airlines Boeing 737 Max jet plane is prepared for to fly from Dallas Fort Worth airport in Grapevine, Texas, Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2020. American Airlines took its long-grounded Boeing 737 Max jets out of storage, updating key flight-control software, and flying the planes in preparation for the first flights with paying passengers later this month. “I'm really disgusted by the whole thing and the fact that American Airlines would pay for that. It's not responsible for them to put you on this flight.”Chicago-based Boeing said Wednesday it has flown more than 1,400 test flights on updated Max planes. Regulators in Europe and Brazil have cleared a path for their airlines to resume Max flights in a few weeks.

European regulator moves to clear Boeing 737 for flight

BERLIN – European regulators on Tuesday took a step closer to letting the Boeing 737 Max fly again, publishing a proposed airworthiness directive that could see the aircraft cleared within weeks after being grounded for nearly two years over deadly crashes. The publication of the directive by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency opens a 28-day public consultation period after which the agency will review the input and then approve the aircraft for flight. That happened less than five months after another Max flown by Indonesia’s Lion Air plunged into the Java Sea. The move by the EASA, which is based in Cologne, Germany, comes after the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration already cleared the Boeing 737 Max earlier this month. The European directive requires the same changes as those mandated by the FAA, so there will be no software or technical differences between jets operated by American or European carriers.

'Wonder Woman 1984' to debut in theaters and on HBO Max

“Wonder Woman 1984” isn’t skipping theaters or moving to 2021, but it is altering course. After the first month for free on HBO Max, “Wonder Woman 1984” will play in theaters for an additional few weeks before being made available for rental on demand. Warner Bros. also sent its next big film, “The Witches” straight to HBO Max, which parent company Warner Media launched earlier this year. “Wonder Woman 1984” is a major tentpole for Warner Bros. Is it possible for that to happen again this Christmas with Wonder Woman 1984 between theaters and HBO Max?” Killar wrote Wednesday.

Boeing Max cleared for takeoff, 2 years after deadly crashes

(AP Photo/Elaine Thompson, File)After nearly two years and a pair of deadly crashes, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has cleared Boeing’s 737 Max for flight. The nation’s air safety agency announced the move early Wednesday, saying it was done after a “comprehensive and methodical” 20-month review process. U.S. airlines will fly the Max once Boeing updates critical software and computers and pilots receive training in flight simulators. The FAA says the order was made in cooperation with air safety regulators worldwide. Anton Sahadi, who lives in Jakarta, Indonesia, and lost two brothers in the Lion Air crash, said it's too early for the Max to fly again.

Deeper job cuts at Boeing as pandemic throttles air travel

Boeing said Wednesday that it will cut 7,000 more jobs as it continues to bleed money during a pandemic that has smothered demand for new airline planes. Boeing Co. outlined the job cuts on the same day it reported a $449 million loss for the third quarter, a swing from the $1.17 billion it earned in the same period last year. Thursday marks the second anniversary of the crash of a Lion Air 737 Max off the coast of Indonesia. With customers in no mood to buy expensive new planes, Boeing expects to keep burning cash. The Max was Boeing’s best-selling plane, but now the company has 450 in storage that it can’t deliver.

FAA chief tests changes to Boeing's grounded 737 Max

A Boeing 737 MAX jet, piloted by Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) chief Steve Dickson, takes off on a test flight from Boeing Field, Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2020, in Seattle. The MAX was grounded worldwide in early March 2019 after the second of two fatal accidents that together killed 346 people aboard almost-new aircraft. An FAA spokesman said Boeing pilots would also be on the plane when it takes off from the former Boeing Field in the Seattle area. Boeing hopes to win FAA approval later this year for changes it has made to flight-control software and computers. The bill would also require plane manufacturers to tell the FAA, airlines and pilots about automated systems that can alter a plane’s path.

Panel's report blasts Boeing, FAA for crashes, seeks reforms

But both the agency and Boeing have said certification of the Max complied with FAA regulations, the 246-page report said. He said the committee won't scrap the delegation program, and he hopes to reach agreement on reforms before year's end. Committee investigators said they found several instances in which Boeing concealed information about MCAS from the FAA and airlines. But there was no evidence that they reported this to the FAA, the report said. According to the report, Boeing wanted to keep details about MCAS from the FAA so it wouldn't require additional pilot training.

Regulators to examine pilot training for Boeing 737 Max jets

Aviation regulators and pilots from several countries will begin next week reviewing Boeing’s proposal for training pilots to fly the revamped 737 Max, a sign that the grounded plane is moving closer to returning to service. The Federal Aviation Administration said Friday that the review will start Monday at London’s Gatwick Airport and last about nine days. The review will include aviation officials and pilots from the United States, Canada, Brazil and the European Union. A spokesman for Chicago-based Boeing said the company expects to win regulatory approval to resume shipping new Max jets in the fourth quarter. Earlier Friday, Europe’s flight safety authority said the first flight tests for the Max were completed.

Selena Gomez takes the heat in new cooking show

Selena Gomez is taking the heat in the kitchen. The singer-actress slices and dices in Selena + Chef, debuting Aug. 13 on the new HBO Max streaming service. There was no one off-camera perfectly prepping the ingredients and Gomez didn't glam up her clothing or makeup while chopping and stirring. Remote cameras set up in her kitchen captured Gomez's mishaps that include flames in the oven and squirting juices. Gomez learned to use a wet towel to adjust the shape and position on the plate of a classic French omelette.

Coronavirus impact saps AT&T in 2Q; hit to WarnerMedia

The coronavirus sapped $2.8 billion in revenue from AT&T in its most recent quarter, mostly in its WarnerMedia TV and film division. WarnerMedia revenue fell 23% to $6.8 billion due to a pullback by TV advertisers, particularly as there were no live sports, and movie theaters closed. The company is hoping to navigate the shift to online video with its HBO Max service, which launched in late May. It's not specified how many were existing HBO customers who upgraded to Max for free and how many were new customers; there are 36.3 million U.S. subscribers to HBO Max or HBO. The company said it had “work to do to educate and motivate” HBO customers that they could switch to HBO Max, which has more content.

NBC's video service Peacock stresses 'free,' looks to 2021

So now Peacock, which launches Wednesday, is hoping that blaring free in an ad campaign for the service will entice viewers wary of adding yet another video subscription to their stack, even in todays stay-at-home world. It has a free tier and a $5-a-month paid tier with more video. Disney Plus, Apple TV Plus, HBO Max and short-video service Quibi have all launched over the past year. As a Comcast internet customer, she could get Peacock for free, so she did. HBO Max did not reply to a question about its subscriber count since launch.

Report: Boeing fell short in disclosing key changes to Max

The crashes killed 346 people and led regulators around the world to ground every Boeing 737 Max nearly 400 of them. Many of the findings in the report by the Transportation Department's acting inspector general have previously been published in news accounts. In early development of the Max, Boeing indicated MCAS would not activate often, and so the system didn't receive a detailed review by FAA. However, the agency let the plane continue to fly while Boeing began fixing the system, a job Boeing expected to complete by July 2019. The second Max crash occurred in March 2019.
