But with the higher numbers of COVID-19 cases reported over the past several weeks, Busch has changed her mind from brick and mortar to virtual school. Shes also concerned that her grandson could bring the virus back home to her and her husband who is recovering from heart surgery. And pretty soon the school is going to explode again and everybody's going to be back home," she said. Busch said she's now enrolled her grandson in Volusia Live, where he'll follow scheduled online classes at home.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Parents and students are gearing up for graduation this week with dress rehearsals. New Smyrna Beach High School had its graduation rehearsal Tuesday afternoon. News 6 was not allowed inside while students practiced but 18-year-old Chelsea Lewis shared her thoughts about this year's graduation. “We wanted to give our graduating students the most special graduation we can give them under these circumstances,” said Berrio. The school district will also be live-streaming the graduations which start on Thursday.

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. A retired teacher from New Smyrna Beach High School is accused of soliciting sex from a minor, according to the Volusia County Sheriffs Office. He is a volunteer at New Smyrna Beach high school, according to detectives. Investigators said when detectives talked to Benefield about the allegation of soliciting the minor for sex he admitted to having the conversation with the victim. Detectives said the suspect is known to the victim, but not through his role as a volunteer at the high school. The Sheriffs Office said anyone who believes they may have been victimized by Benefield is asked to contact the child exploitation unit at 386-323-3574.
