According to witnesses, Mahaa and Hix were in a 2005 Infiniti and passing cars illegally on the shoulder. It's not known which of the two were driving, the FHP said.

The driver swerved to avoid debris on the shoulder and struck a Hyundai being driven by a 36-year-old Deltona woman, the FHP said. She was not hurt.

The Infiniti then hit a guardrail, ejecting Mahaa and Hix, the FHP said. Mahaa was pronounced dead at the scene, and Hix died at Central Florida Regional Hospital, troopers said.

The crash remains under investigation.
