Getting in, around downtown Orlando over summer will be different

Update on new projects, trouble spots

ORLANDO, Fla. – Summer is here and schools head into summer vacation, but one thing that won’t get a break is the Big Drive.

As temperatures are on the rise, moving into summer the same thing can be said for construction with I-4 Ultimate. Drivers can expect new closures and detours, especially focused in and around downtown Orlando.

“We have a major closure that just started in the downtown area on Lake Lucerne Circle, David Parks, public information officer for I-4 Ultimate, said. “ That’s just south of the 4008. "That’s a multi month closure that allows crews to get in and start doing some bridge demolition on the 408.”

Lake Lucerne will be the first of several new closures in the area. That closure will be in place for at least the next six months. All of the closures in the spot are part of the 1-4/408 re-configuration.

“We’re going to give that interchange a complete overhaul, a facelift. It will work a lot better than it does today when construction is complete,” Parks said.

To get around, stay on South Orange Avenue around Lake Lucerne into downtown.

“We’ve got a handful of major soccer events that are coming up so we’re suspending operations in the downtown area the nights of those soccer matches,” said Parks.

Once it goes into effect it’s recommended to take the Kaley exit just before South street and from there head onto Division to travel north into downtown.
