2 killed in Daytona Beach crash

Tomoka Farms Road shut down in both directions

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A double fatal crash forced officials to close Tomoka Farms Road in Daytona Beach on Wednesday.

Police said the vehicle was speeding near U.S. Highway 92 and struck a tree. It was likely there for several hours before a passerby called in the crash around 7 a.m.

Yancey Demarth Axon, 42, and Latonia Williams, 45, were partially ejected from a 2014 four-door Lincoln MKZ and died at the scene, according to Daytona Beach police Deputy Chief Jakari Young.

"They were obviously going at a high rate of speed when they hit a tree and were partially ejected so right now we are investigating it as a general death investigation," Young said.

Authorities said the vehicle may have also been shot, but that's under investigation. No weapons were found in the car and Williams, who was driving, did not suffer any gunshot wounds.

"Based on what we are looking at on the vehicle it appeared that they there may have been some gunshots of the vehicle," Young said. "Upon further investigation, we are not so sure if that's exactly what happened."

Letha Payne said she's still in shock over what happened to her neice.

"I don't know if she died instantly or on impact or maybe she had internally bleeding and if someone could have found her earlier they probably could have saved her life," Payne said.

Tomoka Farms Road was shut down in both directions from U.S. 92 to Dunn Avenue. Williamson Boulevard can be used as an alternate route.
