Report: SunPass to work outside of Florida

Transportation Department working on deal with 14 states

ORLANDO, Fla. – Florida drivers will be able to use their SunPass transponders on toll roads in other states within the next few months, according to a report.

The Miami Herald reports Florida's Turnpike Enterprise is working on a deal with the transportation departments in 14 other states. Those include New York and New Jersey, which use E-ZPass -- the largest electronic toll system in the world.

According to the report, the deal would allow Florida drivers to use SunPass in other states while drivers from outside of Florida will be able to use their transponders on Florida's toll roads.

SunPass and E-ZPass administrators want to take their time before launching the new program in order to avoid "a glitch-plagued start," according to The Miami Herald.

The 14 states involved in the deal are Delaware, Indiana, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia and West Virginia.
