PALM BAY, Fla. – An 11-year-old girl was seriously injured late Saturday after being struck by a vehicle while crossing one of the busiest intersections in Palm Bay, according to News 6 partner Florida Today.

The incident took place about 10:30 p.m. on Palm Bay Road near Hollywood Boulevard as the unidentified girl and several other teens attempted to go across the multi-lane roadway.

“It’s a very dangerous intersection. It was an accident and happened when she and the other group of juveniles were crossing the road. There was a green light,” said Lt. Greg Leonard of the Palm Bay Police Department.

The youth, believed to be in the crosswalk of the darkened roadway, had left a nearby activities center. It was not immediately known if the youth were accompanied by adults.

The child, who was thrown several feet along the roadway following the impact, was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and Women in Orlando. Witnesses said that motorists continued to drive around the scene even as the child was lying in the roadway. At least one of the child’s parents arrived at the scene minutes after it happened, Leonard said.

The driver of the small compact vehicle that hit the child was not injured, Florida Today reported.

Palm Bay’s traffic investigators continued their investigation through the night. “Everything is still under investigation,” Leonard said early Sunday.

The stretch of Palm Bay Road near the Walmart Supercenter leading to the Interstate 95 interchange is considered one of the busiest in south Brevard.

In March 2019, two pedestrians were struck and killed crossing the street on Palm Bay Road and Riviera Drive.
