ORLANDO, Fla. – The family of a 19-year-old man fatally shot outside a Jones High School football game in 2022 is suing Orange County Public Schools because of his death.

Gamaine Brown was one of several people shot after the game ended on Nov. 12, 2022. He was killed, while two others were injured.

There were Orlando police officers working security and trying to clear the stadium after the game when the shots were heard. The gunshots were fired between two groups of people, but police say Brown was a bystander.

When a fight broke out inside the game, the lawsuit claims the officers and the principal escorted the people involved in the fight from the game, but no one made sure they left the area and didn’t return.

The lawsuit says there were only two police officers present, which was a “total lack of adequate security” at a football game that was open to the public, especially since there had allegedly been other violent incidents at games before.

“In fact, on one occasion, Oviedo High School canceled and refused to play at Jones High School due to the dangerous surroundings, and prior incidents. In response, Defendant changed the game schedule and temporarily added extra security at Jones High School for that game,” the lawsuit claims.

The lawsuit also claims there weren’t enough working security cameras in the area.

Brown’s family is suing OCPS for negligence and wrongful death.

Two teenagers were arrested in the case, but charges were later dropped against one of them because the state attorney said there was insufficient evidence.
