KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — (AP) — Tennessee gave coach Josh Heupel a big raise that puts him among the highest-paid coaches in college football after he led the Volunteers to their best season in more than 20 years. Heupel will make $9 million per year through the 2028 football season under the contract extension announced by the school Tuesday and signed Jan. 19. Tennessee finished Heupel's second season ranked sixth by The Associated Press college football poll, the Vols' highest finish since 2001. He now is among at least 10 head football coaches at public schools making at least $9 million. UCF said in a Thursday news release that it will immediately begin a national search for a new vice president and director of athletics following White’s departure. When White first joined UCF in 2015, former UCF head coach George O’Leary had just resigned as the head coach and the interim athletics director. White was hired as the vice president and director of athletics in November 2015 and was expected to quickly find a head football coach. White will be entering murky waters within the Tennessee Athletics department, which has a football program that has spiraled over the last decade within the Southeastern Conference.

White said UCF Athletics is projecting a $12.7 million loss in revenue — and approximately $2 million in increased COVID-19 related expenses — for a total loss of approximately $14.7 million. White provided a breakdown of UCF Athletics’ approach for mitigating the nearly $15 million loss to a about a $5 million deficit. White said UCF Athletics worked with every sport and administrative unit to cut 10% from projected fiscal year 2021 budgets. UCF Athletics established hiring and spending freezes and opted not to immediately fill any open positions, he said.

The stadium underwent an $8 million renovation following the 2014 season. Lake Mary family makes record $13 million commitment to UCF

Gary and Barbara Bryant, of Lake Mary, made a commitment of $13 million last month. Once funded, their gift will establish the Gary and Barbara Family Athletic Endowed Scholarship Fund.
