ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Flood mitigation project set to begin in Orange County neighborhood devastated by Hurricane IanOrange County is set to begin a flood mitigation project in the Orlo Vista community. The Orlo Vista area experienced significant flooding last year after Hurricane Ian brought historic levels of rain. Orlo Vista residents are invited to an informational meeting on March 21 to learn more about the work being completed. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Orlo Vista Chamber of Commerce located at 38 South Hastings Street. , Fla. — One day after receiving their Notice to Proceed, construction crews were out along the lakes in Orlo Vista setting up fencing to contain dirt in their future job site. The mitigation plan was formed after Hurricane Irma devastated the region in 2017. The project cost will be $23.15 million, according to county records, and will primarily be funded by the federal government. Laster and Davis both expressed skepticism that Orlo Vista would forever remain dry. “We live in Florida.”County commissioners and staff members will hold a meeting on Tuesday, March 21 at 7 p.m. at the Orlo Vista Chamber of Commerce to update the public on the mitigation project.

ORLANDO, Fla. — The new year will bring several new laws to Florida. These 2023 laws come from this year’s legislative session and also include bills passed during the December special session. Some of the bills include a lobbying ban, health screenings and parts of the property insurance bill. Residents in Orlo Vista were hit hard during Hurricane Ian back when the bill was being discussed. Neighbors said skipping that step would be a relief, considering they were told Orlo Vista would not start fixing its infrastructure until February 2024.

There’s a $10 million plan that was drafted after Hurricane Irma in 2017 to address flooding, which would expand three retention ponds in the Orlo Vista community.
