Community members have been campaigning for months to cancel the project or cut the number of homes that would be built, to little avail. An agreement made more than a decade ago between the landowner and the city effectively guaranteed the project would pass. Deputies search for missing Lake County teen, 1-year-old daughter
LAKE COUNTY, Fla. – Deputies with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office are searching for a missing 15-year-old girl and her 1-year-old daughter. According to the Sheriff’s Office, Niviyana Pagan and her 12-month-old daughter, Milani, were last seen around 1 a.m. Monday at the girl’s home in Minneola. Deputies said Niviyana has a history of running away and could be in the areas of Clermont or Mascotte. Niviyana has brown hair, brown eyes and a nose ring, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Anyone with information on her whereabouts is asked to call the Lake County Sheriff’s Office at 352-343-2102.
20-year-old Lake County man killed in head-on crash
LAKE COUNTY, Fla. – A 20-year-old Lake County man was killed in a crash in the area of Bluff Lake Road and Covington Road around 4:20 a.m. on Saturday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The FHP said Jonathan Deleon, of Mascotte, was driving his pickup northbound on Buff Lake Road. Investigators said a semi-truck was heading southbound on Bluff Lake Road. Troopers said for an unknown reason Deleon drove into the southbound lane and ran into a semi-truck head-on. The crash remains under investigation, according to FHP.
Police: Mascotte duo stole from injured officers vehicle
A man and woman were arrested Saturday after they allegedly stole from the scene of a single-vehicle car crash that left a Mascotte police officer badly injured. MASCOTTE After a Mascotte police officer was ejected from his car in a crash early Saturday morning, two people were arrested and accused of stealing the officers equipment. Caruso, who has been arrested more than 20 times since 2011, was arrested at the scene after witnesses pointed him out to officers. He returned the flashlight to officers and pointed them in Goodwins direction, the affidavit said. It was sad to hear that Carusos first instinct on the scene of an injured officer was to steal from him, Pederson said.dailycommercial.com

Cops: Mascotte man battered pregnant girlfriend over texts
MASCOTTE Police arrested a Mascotte man Thursday after they reportedly found his girlfriend of nine months bleeding in the yard after she jumped through a broken window. Gomez allegedly began striking and choking his girlfriend that night after he saw a text and photo on her phone that he didnt like, she told police. Gomez went to quiet their crying child, she said, and she took the chance to lock the bedroom door and started breaking through the bedroom window. Gomez reportedly broke the door down, but she climbed through the shattered glass just before police arrived. Police say Gomez told them he struck the woman because he was hurting.He was taken to Lake County Jail, where bail was set at $72,000.dailycommercial.com
Man allegedly threatens death on officers, EMS, firefighters
MASCOTTE A man found sleeping behind a dumpster in Mascotte threatened and tried to spit on officers, EMS and firefighters who attempted to walk him to an ambulance, police say. Jerome Anthony Burke, 52, put up a fight after mistaking one of the EMS personnel for the manager of the store who kicked him out earlier that day, the Mascotte arrest affidavit said. When they found him apparently drinking and in a fetal position, they called EMS and Lake County Fire Rescue to have him looked over. He also tried to spit on EMS personnel, but a firefighter managed to put a mask on him before he could. He was charged with five counts of aggravated assault on firefighters and EMS, five counts of threatening a public servant and trespassing.dailycommercial.com
