Riverbank erosion forces lane closures on US-1 in Melbourne, city says

2 northbound lanes of US-1 closed near NASA Boulevard; northbound traffic using one southbound lane, officials say

MELBOURNE, Fla.UPDATE: As of Monday, emergency road repairs are almost complete. Earlier Monday two lanes of northbound U.S. 1 reopened and the outside lane is expected to reopen Tuesday.

Erosion on the banks of the Indian River due to recent heavy rains and flooding has prompted the Florida Department of Transportation to close two northbound lanes on a stretch of U.S. Highway 1 in Melbourne, according to city officials.

The impacted stretch runs from just south of NASA Boulevard to just north of a Nissan dealership at 440 S. Harbor City Boulevard, representing about 3,500 feet of U.S.-1, officials said on Twitter Friday.

FDOT said the lanes will remain closed until further notice and there is no estimated time for the repairs to be completed.

Drivers were advised to take caution, as the northbound flow of traffic was shifted to use one of the southbound lanes in the area, the city said.

No other details were disclosed.
