Volusia County Sheriffโs Office partners with healthcare nonprofit to help people in crisis
VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. โ The Volusia County Sheriffโs Office has partnered with SMA Healthcare, a private nonprofit, that specializes in behavioral healthcare and substance abuse, to launch a program that will connect mental healthcare professionals with people in crisis. On Thursday, Florida Power & Light presented a $10,000 check that will provide 12 iPads to supervisors in the sheriffโs office that will make that connection happen. The iPads will allow sheriffโs office staff to help a person in crisis speak with a healthcare professional over a video call immediately. โWeโre dealing more and more with people who are in a mental crisis,โ said Sheriff Mike Chitwood. Chitwood said the program will start next year in Deltona and if successful, it will be implemented throughout the county.
Duke Energy admits mistakes, apologizes for Hurricane Irma outages
CENTRAL FLORIDA โ Last week, both Duke Energy and Florida Power & Light promised repeatedly that most customers would have their electricity restored by Sunday night. "We've been waiting on Duke Energy to get here and we haven't seen any sign of hope or any kind of workers maybe but once. Monday afternoon, Duke Energy spokesman Jeff Brooks apologized for the missed deadline. This is the largest storm to ever hit the Duke Energy service area. As News 6 was leaving Sandy Shores, several Duke Energy line workers pulled up and began removing a tree that ripped down a powerline.
