Stetson University Receives Nearly $1 Million National Science Foundation Grant for STEM
In mid-November, the National Science Foundation officially awarded Stetson $999,823 for a project titled Cohort-Based Interdisciplinary Learning to Increase Retention and Graduation Rates of Undergraduate Students in Science, Technology and Mathematics. William Miles, PhD; Ben Tanner, PhD; Lynn Kee, PhD; and Holley Lynch, PhD, are the co-principal investigators. Specifically, Stetson’s STEM curriculum development initiative is intended to promote STEM enrollment in two primary ways, cited Grubbs, a professor and chair of chemistry. “This will be realized through project-based learning in a grant-related environmental science course and through collaborative student research projects,” Tanner noted. I am excited to welcome a new generation of STEM students at Stetson.”For Miles, the NSF award represents all of the above — plus the chance for math to be part of the equation.

What STEM careers and this Indy 500 champion have in common
ORLANDO, Fla. - When you think of careers in science, technology, engineering and math, race car driving probably isn't the first thing that comes to mind, but three-time Indy 500 champion Helio Castronoves said all four fields actually make his driving career possible. Castronoves spoke at the Great Minds in STEM conference, teaching students how science, technology, math and engineering come together to make his car safely hit speeds of more than 200 mph. Great Minds in STEM mentors the next generation of STEM professionals and focuses on under served communities, pairing middle and high school students with mentors. Great Mind in STEM Chairman of the Board Juan Rivera said it's important for students to hear from professional like Castroneves. And then we give them role models of professionals who went through the process and are now contributing to the nation by being a STEM professional," he said.
