Hurricane Agatha sets May record, then weakens over Mexico

Tropical Weather Hurricane Agatha This satellite image made available by NOAA shows Hurricane Agatha off the Pacific coast of Oaxaca state, Mexico on Monday, May 30, 2022, at 8:30 a.m. EDT. (NOAA via AP) (Uncredited)PUERTO ESCONDIDO, Mexico — (AP) — Hurricane Agatha made history as the strongest hurricane ever recorded to come ashore in May during the eastern Pacific hurricane center, making landfall on a sparsely populated stretch of small beach towns and fishing villages in southern Mexico. The U.S. National Hurricane Center said the storm should dissipate overnight, but warned that the system’s heavy rains still posed a threat of dangerous flash floods for Mexico's southern states. “There is a lot of rain and sudden gusts of strong wind,” said Silvia Ranfagni, manager of the Casa Kalmar hotel in Zipolite. He said the region’s hurricanes typically get their start from tropical waves coming off the coast of Africa.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Agatha was expected to dissipate overnight, but warned that the system's heavy rains still posed a threat of dangerous flash flood. The government’s Mexican Turtle Center — a former slaughterhouse turned conservation center in Mazunte — closed to visitors because of the hurricane. He said the region’s hurricanes typically get their start from tropical waves coming off the coast of Africa.

(NOAA via AP) (Uncredited)PUERTO ESCONDIDO, Mexico — (AP) — The strongest hurricane on record to make landfall in May in the eastern Pacific swept ashore on a stretch of tourist beaches and fishing towns in southern Mexico on Monday. Torrential rains and howling winds from Hurricane Agatha whipped palm trees and drove tourists and residents into shelters in a region that is sparsely populated except for a handful of small communities along the shore. “There is a lot of rain and sudden gusts of strong wind,” said Silvia Ranfagni, manager of Zipolite's Casa Kalmar hotel. After forming on Sunday, Agatha quickly gained power, and it made landfall as a strong Category 2 hurricane Monday afternoon, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

(NOAA via AP) (Uncredited)MEXICO CITY — (AP) — Hurricane Agatha, the first of the eastern Pacific season, headed for a stretch of tourist beaches and fishing towns on Mexico’s southern coast Monday amid warnings of dangerous storm surge and flooding from heavy rains. Agatha hits southern Mexico coast as strongest May hurricane

Hurricane Agatha has become the strongest hurricane on record to make landfall in May in the eastern Pacific as it swept ashore on a sparsely populated stretch of tourist beaches and fishing towns in southern Mexico.

1st hurricane of 2022, Agatha heads for Mexico tourist towns

Tropical Weather Hurricane Agatha This satellite image made available by NOAA shows Hurricane Agatha, center, off the Pacific coast of Mexico on Sunday, May 29, 2022, at 11:20 a.m. EDT. In early evening Sunday, the recently formed hurricane had maximum sustained winds of 110 mph (175 kph) — just 1 mph under the threshold for a Category 3, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. The center said Agatha could have winds of 120 mph (193 kph) when it makes landfall. The U.S. National Hurricane Center warned of dangerous costal flooding as well as large and destructive waves near where Agatha makes landfall. Because the storm’s current path would carry it over the narrow waist of Mexico’s isthmus, the hurricane center said there was a chance the storm’s remnants could reemerge over the Gulf of Mexico.

Managers of New York Fish Dealer Plead Guilty to Fishing Fraud Conspiracy

On April 20, a federal grand jury indicted Christopher Winkler, Bryan Gosman, Asa Gosman and Bob Gosman Co. Inc. with one count of conspiracy, among other crimes. Bryan and Asa Gosman admitted that this fish was then sold to a now-defunct company, an unindicted co-conspirator, in the New Fulton Fish Market in the Bronx, New York. Both Asa Gosman and Bryan Gosman had an ownership interest in the defunct company. In court documents, Bryan and Asa Gosman admit that the sales of illegal fish (to both companies) totaled at least $240,000 wholesale. Bryan and Asa Gosman stated that part of the conspiracy was to falsify both FVTRs and dealer reports to cover-up the fact that fish were taken in excess of quotas.

An effort is underway to examine the potential advantages and disadvantages of changing the official start date of the Atlantic hurricane season,” said Communications and Public Affairs Officer Dennis Feltgen. These scheduled updates will be sent out four times a day at 2 a.m., 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.Is the Atlantic hurricane season becoming more active outside of official hurricane season dates? If looking at the stats, in recent years, we’ve seen more activity outside of the official hurricane season dates. Regardless of when the tropical outlooks are sent out, or IF hurricane season is eventually extended, remember that tropical systems can form anytime of the year.

Northern Lights again possible in parts of contiguous US

ORLANDO, Fla. – Seeing the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis is on the bucket list of many people. The northern lights are a result of these storms. Typically the northern lights hang out closer to the poles, way up north in Canada, Alaska and northern Europe, but during a strong event like this one, they can be seen further south. Northern Lights forecastThe further south you are, the lower in the sky the potential glow will be. The northern lights have been seen in Florida a few times, but it’s extremely rare and takes a large disruption of Earth’s magnetic field from an intense geomagnetic storm.

Delta adds insult to injury in hurricane-ravaged Louisiana

Marcus Peterson walks past a downed tree in his yard after Hurricane Delta moved through, Saturday, Oct. 10, 2020, in Jennings, La. It then moved over Lake Charles, a city where Hurricane Laura damaged nearly every home and building in late August. While Delta was a weaker storm than Category 4 Laura, it brought significantly more flooding, Lake Charles Mayor Nic Hunter said. Forecasters warned that heavy rain, storm surges and flash floods continued to pose dangers in areas from Texas to Mississippi. They arrived back in Lake Charles last weekend, got a new roof on Monday and had to evacuate again Thursday.

Hurricane Delta inflicts new damage on storm-weary Louisiana

This GOES-16 GeoColor satellite image taken Friday, Oct. 9, 2020, at 10:00 a.m. EDT, and provided by NOAA, shows Hurricane Delta in the Gulf of Mexico. – Ripping tarps from already damaged roofs and scattering debris piled by roadsides, Hurricane Delta inflicted a new round of destruction on Louisiana as it struck communities still reeling after Hurricane Laura took a similar path just six weeks earlier. Delta's reach stretched as far west as Galveston, Texas, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) from where the storm struck Louisiana. Tropical Storm Marco fizzled as it hit the southeast Louisiana tip just three days before Laura struck. “The wind is much worse than what Hurricane Laura brought,” Gove said in a message on Twitter.

History proves it: October is an active month for hurricanes in Florida

In fact, 11 major hurricanes, Category 3 or higher, have made landfall in Florida during the 10th month of the year. Being a peninsula doesn’t help when tropical cyclones tend to form in the western Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. Not only is the state prone to Atlantic storms, but the Gulf of Mexico tosses a few our way, too. The most recent and memorable hurricane to strike Florida in October is Hurricane Michael in 2018. It was a tropical storm by the time it reached Naples, spawning five tornadoes that injured 65 people and destroyed 645 homes.

NOAA issues a La Nina Watch. What that could mean for the peak of hurricane season, Central Florida

ORLANDO, Fla. The two words you dont want to hear during hurricane season is La and Nina. On Thursday, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a La-Nina watch, meaning conditions are favorable for the development of La-Nina over the next six months. Marine experts try to save critically endangered whale calf after boat strike

FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. – Marine experts are trying to save the life of a severely injured North Atlantic right whale calf after it was found off the coast of Florida with its mother. Antibiotics were administered Thursday afternoon to the calf by a team of marine experts, which included SeaWorld’s Dr. Hendrik Nollens as a lead veterinarian, in an effort to prevent any infection from forming, but the prognosis remains poor. North Atlantic right whales are a critically endangered species and the population is believed to be less than 430 individuals. The injured calf is one of four calves born this calving season. Currently, the two biggest threats these whales face are being struck by a marine vessel and getting entangled in fishing gear.

Pilot whale dies at SeaWorld Orlando after prolonged medical issues

ORLANDO, Fla. – A pilot whale at SeaWorld Orlando died Saturday after having long-standing medical issues, theme park officials confirmed. NOAA 301 or Fredi, was part of a mass stranding of 23 pilot whales that the SeaWorld Rescue Team and partners responded to in 2011, near Cudjoe Key, Florida. After two months of effort from both the National Marine Fisheries Services and the SeaWorld team, eight of the stranded whales survived. SeaWorld was chosen to help rehabilitate her and provide a home because of the park’s experience with pilot whales. This pilot whale faced continued health issues since her initial stranding."
