Osceola County creates new program after seeing more failing grades in online students
OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. โ The Osceola County School District launched a program to help close the academic achievement gap, which Superintendent Dr. Debra Pace said has been exacerbated by the pandemic. โWe did see a much higher percentage of students in a digital environment with Ds and Fs first semester,โ Pace said. The districtโs new program will offer help before and after school, as well as Saturday school, according to Pace. For the students learning digitally, Pace said teachers will offer classes in a much smaller group setting than what a normal classroom offers. In terms of the subjects, Pace said the achievement gap is most significant in math.
Chronic absenteeism a problem for some Osceola virtual students
OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. โ Osceola County Superintendent Dr. Debra Pace said district officials have seen an increase in chronic absenteeism among students at home doing distance learning. She said with the distance learning option this year, available as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, school leaders are seeing some students miss class at a significant rate. โWeโve identified students with between five and 50% absences for the first semester, that we are now launching a very aggressive communication campaign,โ Pace said. The number of students is 4,687 to be exact, according to Pace. She said with distance learning and students not being in the classroom, itโs harder to get them to engage in a full day of school remotely.

ALK Capitalโs sports investment arm, Velocity Sports Partners, has bought an 84% stake in the northwest English club from British businessmen Mike Garlick and John Banaszkiewicz. Osceola County gives $2.2. million in Cares Act funding to schools
OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. โ Osceola County Commissioners gave Osceola County Public Schools $2.2 million in Cares Act Funding on Thursday. School officials said the money will be used for all sorts of programs like ESOL, STEM and job training for students. A look inside Osceola County classrooms ready to welcome students amid COVID-19
OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. Desks are spaced 4 feet apart and are all facing the same direction at Osceola County Public Schools. Superintendent Dr. Debra Pace said schools are also keeping track of where students sit. She said they will be using seating charts in the classrooms and on the buses so that they can keep track of who students interact with. The superintendent said they've worked this summer to stock up on supplies to ensure every classroom and hallway is equipped. In addition to cleaning supplies, Pace said they have also upgraded the air circulation in the schools.
Walk-thru temperature scanners to be added at some Osceola County schools
OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. Dr. Debra Pace, the superintendent of the School District of Osceola County, said walk-thru, touch-less temperature scanners can be found in some buildings throughout the district. She said the district currently has four of the temperature scanners that they piloted over the summer. Pace said placing the temperature scanners at the high schools was strategic. School officials have also said that the walk-thru temperature scanners are mobile and can be moved to different entrances and buildings.
Lake Mary mom channeled pregnancy cravings in Chipotle photo shoot
LAKE MARY, Florida โ Jordan-Leigh Beal knew just where to take her maternity photos. She and her photographer teamed up for the photo shoot at a Chipotle restaurant in Lake Mary, FL on June 7. Beal says she suffers from hyperemesis gravidarum, a pregnancy condition that makes it hard to keep food down. She says Chipotle has been her "safe food" throughout her pregnancy. "It has been my saving grace and I couldnโt think of a better place to do my photos," Beal says.
