LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — An 82-year-old woman died in a crash in Lake County. The Tavares Police Department said the crash happened on Tuesday at 10:20 a.m. at the intersection of David Walker Drive and Dora Avenue. A Lake County Sheriff’s Office deputy found the woman trapped in her car. Another car, which had the right of way, was traveling on Dora Avenue when it collided with the woman’s passenger door. Central Florida man arrested after running from deadly crash that killed elderly lady

TAVARES, Fla. — A Tavares man is in jail on Saturday, charged with vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident. The deadly crash happened at the intersection of Dead River Road and Oak Drive at 1:51 p.m. on Friday. When officers arrived at the crash scene, witnesses told them the driver of the at-fault vehicle exited his car and ran from the accident. The driver who caused the crash and fled the scene was later identified as 26-year-old Brenten Salerno of Tavares. According to police, Salerno admitted to officers that he was the driver of the vehicle.

Victims slain while they slept, shooter then turns gun on himself, Tavares police say

Crime scene tape outside a home where three people were killed in a murder suicide, according to Tavares police. The victims later identified as James Delgiorno, 41, and Wendy Higgins, 39, were discovered Thursday morning in a home on Lakecrest Drive after Leesburg police requested a well-being check. Leesburg police were able to obtain his vehicle’s GPS data tracing it to Lakecrest Drive and Shorewood Drive near a home owned by Delgiorno. Leesburg authorities notified Tavares police of Mcguirl’s vehicle whereabouts and that Delgiorno and Higgins were likely inside the home. Police said Ahmad Isham was wearing a black hoodie with the word “Security” printed on it when he went to Dora Discount Beverage around 8:45 a.m. on Dec. 8 and hit a store employee on the head with a handgun. Lake County voters encounter computer glitch on Election Day

TAVARES, Fla. – Voters in Lake County ran into problems Tuesday morning shortly after polls opened in Florida on Election Day. “We identified a computer problem in some precincts that incorrectly identified some voters were not registered in that precinct,” said Alan Hays, Lake County supervisor of elections. “The problem was isolated immediately, and corrective action was initiated. ORLANDO, Fla. – Vacation rental giant Airbnb announced it has suspended 40 of its listings in Florida as part of a crackdown on party houses amid the coronavirus pandemic. Breit said the company banned house parties in late 2019, but the pandemic has pushed them to bring suspensions to the public. Lake County Fire Rescue has obtained a Hydrogen Peroxide Decontamination Unity, capable of sterilizing up to 300 N95 masks every three hours for reuse by first responders in the county. Lake County Fire Rescue will begin sterilizing N95 masks for reuse among first responders in the county. This will put our first responders at ease knowing that there is a system in place that will ensure an unlimited supply of PPE (personal protective equipment), said Lake County Fire Rescue Chief Jim Dickerson. The CDC approved the sterilization process of the N95 mask, which they hope will help alleviate shortages while manufacturers work to meet demand. Charles Greenlee, Walter Irvin, Ernest Thomas and Samuel Shepherd were wrongly accused of raping a white woman in Lake County in 1949. The Lake County men were accused under dubious circumstances. Ron DeSantis pardoned the men, and the Lake County Board of County Commissioners began planning the idea for a memorial. The granite memorial, posted in front of the Lake County Historical Museum, features a bronze plaque with a written account of the men’s ordeal.

Missing elderly woman located after car crash, deputies say

TAVARES, Fla. – A woman who went missing Saturday prompting a silver alert to be issued was located in Pasco County, officials said. According to authorities, Sarah Ellen Brian was involved in a car accident in Odessa and was transported to the hospital in good condition. Deputies were searching for 80-year-old Brian, who left her home at 26637 Cayman Drive in Tavares at 9 a.m. Saturday and hadn’t been seen or heard from since. Brian suffers from dementia and is on medication, deputies said.

Lake County boater finds teen’s body in Dead River

TAVARES, Fla. – An investigation is underway in Tavares after a boater found the body of a 19-year-old man in the Dead River, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies said the boater notified authorities after seeing the man’s body in the water near the Palm Gardens Marina around 1:45 p.m. Monday. Deputies said two other men then approached the security guard as he was wrestling with the gunman, forced him to the ground and handcuffed him. Zakee Grahai (News 6)After the robbery, two suspects were arrested in a swampy area on Burleigh Boulevard while two others got away, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Investigators said Hardwick’s body was found about three-quarters of a mile east of where the robbery unfolded.

Lake County students to get free lunches again this year

TAVARES Students dining in their Lake County school cafeteria this year will continue to sit down with their classic tray of food free of charge in 2019-20, district officials say. The Lake County School District has once again enrolled in a national program that provides lunch for students in low-income areas. The lunches are paid for through the Community Eligibility Provision under the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which runs the program, schools and school districts that participate are reimbursed for meals if they qualify based on the number of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunches. Students eating breakfast at school increased by 36% across the district, she said, and students eating school lunches increased by 20%.

TAVARES, Fla. - Police said a woman who was found dead in a Tavares apartment Friday had been there for at least a week, decomposing in the bathtub. Sarah Coursey estimated that 23-year-old Amery Liampas' body had been in the bathtub for seven to 10 days, meaning she was too severely decomposed for first responders to see any immediate cause of trauma. A medical examiner will determine Liampas' cause of death. Authorities said they were called to the Tava Dora Motel & Apartments around 6 p.m. Friday due to complaints of a foul odor. They found Liampas dead and a man suffering from life-threatening injuries.

Umatilla man accused of recording woman at Kohl's arrested

TAVARES A man accused of using his cellphone to record a woman in a Kohl's dressing room was arrested in Umatilla on July 20, just days after a warrant was issued for his arrest. Paul Anthony Lyles, 26, a Umatilla resident, was taken in by Umatilla police on a charge of video voyeurism. Staff at Kohl's, 2700 E. Burleigh Blvd., said Lyles entered a women's changing room in the store's intimate section and put his phone under the door of the adjoining room, where a woman was trying on bras and underwear. When confronted, Lyles ran out of the dressing room and out of the store, police said. He was released from Lake County Jail on July 21 after posting a $5,000 bond.

TAVARES, Fla. - A woman was found dead and a man was rushed to a hospital after officers responded to an apartment on East Alfred Street, according to the Tavares Police Department. Police said at about 6 p.m. Friday, officers responded to the Tava Dora apartments in reference to a foul odor coming from one unit. Investigators said officers found a man, who was flown to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Authorities said a woman was found dead at the scene. 2 found dead in Tavares after man said he shot his wife

TAVARES, Fla. - The Tavares Police Department said a man and a woman were found dead after a man told a dispatcher he shot his wife and was going to shoot himself. TAVARES The Lake County School District was named one of 34 "Districts of Distinction" across the nation in the July/August edition of District Administration magazine for the revitalization of the Leesburg High School construction academy. LCSO probe into deputies' social media coming to close

TAVARES The Lake County Sheriffs Office has nearly completed an internal investigation into 16 deputies who were highlighted by the Plain View Project as making insensitive or disturbing posts on Facebook. Lt. John Herrell, spokesman for the LCSO, said Monday that the investigator was working through final interviews and writing up the report this week. The investigation started in early June, shortly after the LCSO caught wind of the Plain View Project, which gathered social media posts from eight agencies across the countries containing troubling content, from outright racism to an identification with fanatic gun culture. Sixteen active Lake deputies were highlighted over 35 posts, some of which appeared to joke about violence against protestors or marginalized communities. The Plain View Project was started in 2016 by a group of Philadelphia attorneys, according to its website.
