Potential threat found written on Boone High School bathroom wall, district says
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Law enforcement is investigating after officials said a potential threat was found written on a bathroom wall at Boone High School on Monday. The district said a Connect Orange message went out to parents Monday afternoon letting them know about the potential threat. The principal said the district takes these types of situations seriously and that disciplinary action will be handed out according to the Code of Student Conduct, which could include suspension, expulsion or arrest. The district said out of an abundance of caution, there is additional law enforcement present on campus Tuesday. Person of interest in death of Boone High School student jailed on another crime wants out
ORLANDO, Fla. — It was three years ago when a Boone High School student was killed. Now, a person of interest in this case, who is in jail for another crime, is asking to be let out to live his life while he awaits trial. According to court documents, the main person of interest in the case is 21-year-old Deandre Florence. Orlando police said in January 2019, Florence and his friend, Denim Williams, tried to steal a cellphone being sold by Curtis Fulcher. Florence has remained in jail for almost three years, getting his high school diploma.wftv.com
OCPS cancels 2 girls varsity volleyball games due to COVID-19 cases
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Two girls varsity volleyball games scheduled at Boone High School Tuesday and Wednesday have been canceled due to COVID-19, Orange County Public Schools announced Monday. “This decision was made out of an abundance of caution due to a confirmed COVID-19 case and five quarantines associated with the team,” the district said. The games were scheduled to be played against Timber Creek and Windemere high schools. All individuals and parents identified as having been in close contact with the potential confirmed cases have been notified. Orlando native, Boone High graduate to play in Super Bowl 55
ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando native Tommy Townsend is the punter for the Kansas City Chiefs who will face off against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during Super Bowl LV. AdClay Townsend said his son’s journey to the Super Bowl didn’t happen overnight. Tommy Townsend played football games at Boone High’s field from Pop Warner as a child, all the way through high school. His mom Susan Townsend is so proud, showing off a special souvenir: The hand warmers Tommy Townsend wore during the game. “We sat here in this (Boone High School) stadium for all three boys and we have a lot of happy memories with a great community here at Boone High School and it just brings back a lot of good memories.”
West Orange football plays despite campus closing due to COVID-19
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – There was concern the West Orange High School vs. Boone High School football game would not happen. Last week Orange County school district temporarily closed West Orange High School and pivoted students to online learning. District leaders announced 10 people at the high school tested positive for COVID-19, and 158 were told to quarantine and banned extra-curricular activities. OCPS issued a statement and cleared the West Orange High School football team to play against Boone high school. The game was moved to Boone High School and West Orange high school students were not allowed to attend.
Health department gives West Orange High School green light to reopen earlier, play football
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – The West Orange High School campus will reopen to in-person learning about four days earlier than expected after the Florida Department of Health notified school leaders that those possibly exposed to coronavirus will finish their quarantines by the end of September. West Orange shifted to virtual learning only on Sept. 21 after at least 10 COVID-19 were confirmed from staff and/or students. Principal Matt Turner notified West Orange High School families in a ConnectOrange call on Tuesday that the school would reopen Oct. 1. The high school also plans to participate in the upcoming game against Boone High School on Friday at 7 p.m. Until West Orange reopens on Oct. 1, football teams will hold practices at a county park.

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Orange County Schools announced the JV volleyball game between Boone High School and Colonial High School has been canceled due to a positive COVID-19 case. The district said due to the positive case Boone players were asked to quarantine. Residents in Orlando neighborhood worry about speeding near schools
She said drivers are constantly speeding down the street in front of her home. Cimino said she contacted the City of Orlando with her traffic safety concerns and they did a survey. The safety of our residents is important but overall we see a decrease in that area," Orlando police officials said in a statement. However, residents said they continue to see drivers speeding through the residential area. Residents said it's also concerning to see so many drivers disobeying the law and speeding with two schools in the area and a lot of children walking around.
Relative of teen linked to Boone student's death to appear in court
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. - A family member of a teen linked to the death of a Boone High School student who was fatally shot while walking to school is set to appear in court Friday, records show. Deandre Florence, 18, was arrested in April in connection with a phone theft that turned into a shooting, leaving 16-year-old Denim Williams dead. Records show that as authorities were questioning Deandre Florence about that case, they also asked him if he knew anything about the shooting death of 15-year-old Alejandro Vargas Martinez. Deandre Florence has not been charged in connection with Martinez's death and no suspects have been named in the case. Chiquita Florence will appear before a judge Friday morning to explain why she shouldn't be held in contempt of court.
New details link teen to Boone High School student's shooting death
ORLANDO, Fla. - New details have emerged in the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old Boone High School student who was slain while walking to school in December. Florence told investigators that he was not involved in the shooting and had only heard about it from his friends. Records show Florence gave investigators different stories about where he was the day of the shooting. In a recorded conversation between detectives and Florence, investigators told Florence to be honest.
