The shooting occurred around 4:35 p.m. in the area of the Midway Marina. ASTOR, Fla. – After a black bear was found shot and killed behind a home in Lake County, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has doubled the reward for information leading to an arrest. Black bear killed In AstorAccording to the FWC, black bears are protected by law and it is illegal to kill a bear without a hunting or depredation permit. There is one exception to the rule, which allows a person to kill a black bear if it is to protect human life. ”A viable alternative to shooting a bear perceived as a threat is through the use of bear spray,” officials said. The use of paintballs, bear spray and sling shots are also allowed under FWC guidelines.
Two new COVID-19 testing locations open in Lake
The temporary drive-thru sites will open in Fruitland Park and Astor, and operate alongside the currently existing testing sites at the Lake County Fairgrounds and Clermont Arts and Recreation CenteTAVARES Adult Medicine of Lake County will open two new COVID-19 testing locations this week, one extending a reach into the farthest edges of northeast Lake, the county announced Tuesday. The temporary drive-thru sites will open in Fruitland Park and Astor, and operate alongside the currently existing testing sites at the Lake County Fairgrounds and Clermont Arts and Recreation Center. Adult Medicine of Lake County is providing the service for $20 each, whether its a swab or antibody test, thanks to a grant achieved last week. The two new locations are opening in place of one location discontinued last week at Venetian Gardens in Leesburg. All tests used at the sites are FDA approved and available to both residents and non-residents of Lake County.

LAKE COUNTY, Fla. - There is concern over flooding in the Lake County community of Astor because the nearby St. Johns River is more than 2 feet above normal levels due to a rainy summer. Residents living next to the river say they are nervous as Hurricane Dorian is expected to bring more rainfall Tuesday and Wednesday. Those living in the low-lying areas of Astor surrounding the St. Johns River are being encouraged to seek higher ground. The Bells were here during Hurricane Irma and say their backyard flooded then and they fear it will happen again. The county has instituted a no wake zone along the river until further notice and the emergency operations center is at level one.
Lake County braces for St. Johns River to flood during Hurricane Dorian
On Friday, Lake County Emergency Management Director Tommy Carpenter announced that the St. Johns River was at action stage and is expected to flood midweek if Hurricane Dorian continues on its current track. Now with Hurricane Dorian barreling toward Central Florida, many are scared it will be deja vu. But for some Lake County residents, this will be their first hurricane in this area. Right now there are five sandbag locations stationed across Lake County for residents living in the district. Carpenter encouraged all Lake County residents to be ready by noon on Sunday.
Sanford man accused of attack in Astor
ASTOR Deputies arrested a Sanford man Tuesday after a call for a ride out of Astor turned into harrowing fight for his alleged victim. The man told deputies that when he arrived to pick up the woman, Boone and another man, identified as Tyler Cribbs, exited the Astor home and began arguing with him as Boone's girlfriend packed her bags. Cribbs, who wasnt there when deputies arrived, reportedly hit the victim with a pipe while Boone grabbed the knife and stick. The victim said he managed to disarm Cribbs and get the knife from Boone after he was struck by the stick. Cribbs has a warrant out for his arrest for aggravated battery, and deputies are still looking for him.
