Fastly blames global internet outage on software bug
Dozens of websites briefly went offline around the globe Tuesday, including CNN, The New York Times and Britain's government home page, after an outage at the cloud service Fastly. The incident illustrates how vital a small number of behind-the-scenes companies have become to running the internet. The problem at Fastly meant internet users couldn't connect to a host of popular websites early Tuesday including The New York Times, the Guardian, Twitch, Reddit and the British government's homepage. “Even though there were specific conditions that triggered this outage, we should have anticipated it,” Rockwell said. San Francisco-based Fastly provides what’s called a content delivery network — an arrangement that allows customer websites to store data such as images and videos on various mirror servers across 26 countries.wftv.com
EXPLAINER: Just how vulnerable is the internet?

But the incident — Fastly's traffic dropped 75% for about an hour just as the U.S. East Coast was beginning to stir —raises questions about how vulnerable the global internet is to more serious disruption. ARE OTHER PARTS OF THE INTERNET SIMILARLY VULNERABLE? In March, a fire at a datacenter in Strasbourg, France, owned by a major cloud computing firm knocked out service to millions of websites. “Your device is both the best friend of the internet and the best insurance policy,” he said.wftv.com
What is Fastly and what caused the internet to go down today?
A wide range of major websites including eBay, Paypal, The Financial Times, Reddit, Twitch and The Guardian were taken offline due to what is believed to be an issue with the Fastly cloud hosting service. Some of the affected websites displayed the message "Error 503 Service Unavailable." ET, those trying to log onto the sites Fastly works with were getting error messages saying the site could not load. A Fastly spokesperson told the Times that the problem was caused by a disruption to Fastly’s systems that send website content from a server to individual users. About an hour after the sites went down, Fastly issued another statement saying, “The issue has been identified and a fix has been applied.”The sites came back online soon after that.wftv.com
