Stetson University football player Nick Blakely, 19, died in Aug. 2017 after pulling himself out of practice because of dizziness and tightness in his chest.

DeLAND, Fla. – A 22-year-old man was arrested late Friday in connection with an incident that left a Stetson University student injured, authorities said. DeLand police said Monday that George Tsiouklas was arrested in Pinellas County on a charge of felony battery. Information about the victim, who was hospitalized, has not been released. According to Stetson’s athletics website, Tsiouklas is from Palm Harbor and played football at Stetson from 2016-19.

DeLAND, Fla. Dozens of cases of COVID-19 have been reported at Stetson University, according to school officials. On Monday, a spokesperson for the school said there are currently 54 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus at the DeLand campus. At last check, no cases had been reported at the College of Law campus in Gulfport, the school spokesperson said. The reported cases come less than two weeks after the start of the fall semester, according to the universitys online academic calendar. 5 Stetson University student-athletes test positive for COVID-19
DeLAND, Fla. Five Stetson University student-athletes are isolating after testing positive for COVID-19 earlier this month, according to the schools associate director of athletics. On July 8, 64 student-athletes were tested in preparation of the return of sporting events in the fall. Of those, five tested positive. During the next two weeks, more student-athletes will be tested as well as staff members who are in town. As of Thursday, 4,572 people in Volusia County have tested positive for COVID-19 since early March.
West Volusia swim team looking for a pool to use for practice
VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. The West Volusia Killer Whales Swim Team is looking for a pool to use for practice. Kati Kaye coaches the team and said for the last four years, the swim club has partnered with Stetson University to use the Hollis Center Pool in exchange for giving swim lessons to community members. The nonprofit swim club has almost 80 swimmers, many whove spent hours training to compete in the now-canceled USA championship swim meets. Her coaches have been doing YouTube workouts for the team while they wait but they need the water. We have the protocols in place and were ready to move forward to be able to coach under those guidelines.

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. - A former student from Stetson University who went missing last Sunday has been found. The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office on Sunday said deputies located Valentina Arango, who was located alone at a rest stop along I-275 on the north side of Sunshine Skyway Bridge at 12:14 p.m.Arango was taken into protective custody for a mental health evaluation and was in good physical condition, deputies said. DELAND, Fla. - Deland police officers said they have arrested the man at the root of their pushed over potted plants problem. Officers with Stetson University also received vandalism reports of knocked over plant pots the day following. The 27-year-old told officers he got really drunk and didn't remember the evening in which the potted plants were knocked over, according to the arrest report. When officers asked if he knew about the flower pots that were pushed over along the street, he told officers, "I pushed one over," according to the arrest report. Bonner also told officers he also walked through Stetson University, where he knocked over pots.
WASTED MINDS: Higher education offers solutions to Florida's mass incarceration woes
At Tomoka Correctional Institute in Daytona Beach, Stetson University runs a program that makes it Florida's only 4-year university to offer inmates for-credit courses. Within three years, there were just eight college prison programs left. A dorm for men in the college program is sequestered from other prisoners. They really are some of the best students Ive ever had, said Keri Watson, who heads UCFs Florida Prison Education Project. Florida has the third-largest prison system in the U.S. and up until a few years ago, we had no higher education, said Watson, who also taught prison inmates while at Auburn University.
