Panthers hope All-Star weekend showcased team's investment

SUNRISE, Fla. — (AP) — Matthew Tkachuk is under contract to the Florida Panthers for much of the next decade. And right there are two compelling reasons for players to join the Panthers in the coming years. So much about the Panthers has changed over the last few years, and All-Star weekend was both confirmation and affirmation. “There’s no quick-fixes,” Florida Panthers president Matthew Caldwell said. And the Panthers can only hope some All-Stars this weekend took notice.

NHL All-Star Game final matchup: Central vs Atlantic

SUNRISE, Fla. — (AP) — The Central Division and the Atlantic Division have reached the final of the NHL All-Star Game. Neither division has won the All-Star Game in six previous editions of the 3-on-3 format. The All-Star Game is a series of three games — all 3-on-3, all 20 minutes in length. This year marks the seventh time that the NHL used the divisional-team tournament format for the All-Star Game. The Pacific Division won the first such game, the Metropolitan Division won the second, and they continued alternating wins in all six editions under this format — but neither made the final Saturday.

Gary Bettman defends NHL handling of Pride night situations

SUNRISE, Fla. — (AP) — NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman at his state of the game news conference Saturday at All-Star Weekend defended the way the league and two teams handled situations that arose regarding Pride night celebrations. Nine days later, the New York Rangers opted not to wear Pride jerseys or use Pride stick tape as part of their night despite previously advertising they planned to do so. And part of being diverse and welcoming is understanding those differences.”Bettman said the NHL was not accepting bigotry or promoting homophobia. “Being in Toronto where hockey is so important, we may not have 80-degree temperature, but we’ve got real intensity in one of the great hockey markets in the world,” Bettman said. “The city is always buzzing, especially for an event like this,” Leafs All-Star and Toronto area native Mitch Marner said.

AP source: Panthers get Tkachuk from Flames for Huberdeau

The Panthers, a team that won the President’s Trophy this past season for having the NHL’s best regular-season record, apparently wanted him more than most. Tkachuk had career bests of 42 goals, 62 assists and 104 points this past season for Calgary. The trade means Calgary is without its two leading scorers from this past season. Johnny Gaudreau, who led the Flames with 115 points, signed a seven-year deal with Columbus as a free agent last week. Tkachuk is 24, Huberdeau is 29, and that surely was something that went into Florida’s thinking when deciding about making an eight-year commitment.
