It is the fifth costliest storm in U.S. history behind Hurricanes Katrina, Harvey, Maria and Sandy, all also retired, said National Hurricane Center senior hurricane specialist Daniel Brown, who is on the WMO committee that retires names. The WMO has retired 94 hurricane names in the Atlantic because of a storm’s deadly history and 12 of them started with the letter I. There have been nine C and F named storms, said University of Miami hurricane researcher Brian McNoldy who tracks retired names. But if that’s the case, why aren’t H and J right up there in retired names, McNoldy asked.

In New Orleans, local television stations broadcast live images of the storm as it barreled across the region. Still, the twister was the third time they’ve had major weather damage since Katrina in 2005. About 13,000 homes and businesses were reportedly without power in the three parishes around New Orleans after the storm.

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office said the parish coroner's office was working with investigators to determine if the remains were those of Timothy Satterlee, 71, who has been missing since the Aug. 30 attack. Ida had caused widespread flooding and knocked out electricity and phone service in parts of south Louisiana when it came ashore Aug. 29.

Nearby Hinckston Run Dam was also being monitored but appeared stable by late afternoon, he said, by which time water levels at Wilmore dam were receding.
