135 people asked to quarantine in Brevard County schools after COVID-19 exposure
BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. More than 100 people have been asked to quarantine after Brevard County Public Schools officials say there have been 42 confirmed cases of the coronavirus within the district. A district spokesperson says up to 135 people have been asked to quarantine since Aug. 7. The confirmed cases of COVID-19 were detected among staff, teachers and students, district officials said. Earlier this month, the Brevard Federation of Teachers union reported at least 15 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the weeks leading up to the school year. Brevard County students started school on Aug. 25.
Brevard Schools reports 6,500 unregistered students at end of first week of school
VIERA, Fla. Following its first week of classes, Brevard Public Schools said 6,700 students remain unaccounted for and are not registered for in school or learning at home options. The Brevard County teachers union called the unregistered numbers a reflection of parents who are questioning the safety of reopening plans amid the pandemic. The teachers union said that since Monday, there have been confirmed coronavirus cases in schools including both teachers and students. The school district did not comment on questions related to cases. School leaders did say that the longer students wait to report their enrollment plans, the more concerned the district becomes.
Seminole, Brevard school districts approve new face mask rules for school year
SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. Seminole and Brevard County Public Schools approved new rules on wearing masks just days before their school years are set to begin. I have never seen an issue that has been presented before us that has become so divisive, said Dr. Tina Colderone, a Seminole school board member. The new rules will require all staff and students to wear a face mask in school and on school buses when social distancing is not achievable. In Brevard County, school board members passed new mask rules similar to Seminole Countys with one important distinction. Both districts mask rules were approved for only 90 days, allowing the superintendent to extend that expiration if he or she feels the need.
