The family of a 10-year-old accused of groping a Volusia County Schools employee wants the charges dropped, employee fired and an apology issued.

OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — Osceola County students go back to class on Thursday, but they won’t have to wear masks if they don’t want to. The school board back in July made the decision to make masks optional, before there was a lot of information about the delta variant. School board member Terry Castillo said the board made that decision, and it’s one she will have to live with. But given the rise in cases the last few weeks, she personally doesn’t agree with making masks optional. The school board meets next week.

Student-athletes from Volusia County Schools will for the first time be offered free electrocardiogram (ECG) screenings in addition to the annual state-required sports physical for middle and high schoolers, through a partnership with AdventHealth. The ECG screenings will be offered free of charge at the AdventHealth sports physical event for students in June. Funding for the AEDs were provided through the school district’s partnership with AdventHealth, the Official Healthcare Champion of Volusia County Schools. AdventHealth will offer the ECG screenings along with Who We Play For, a nonprofit that aims to eliminate preventable sudden cardiac arrest among students. For those who miss the free ECG screenings at the AdventHealth event, Who We Play For will also offer multiple ECG screening events at VCS’ 10 high schools for a small fee of about $20.

Those in quarantine who don’t have symptoms can also get a PCR test on day six after that exposure and then leave quarantine the next day if the results come back negative. Earlier in the pandemic, the recommendation for quarantine was 14 days.

During the news conference leaders explained that even with children back in school, positive cases have not spiked. In Volusia County there are approximately 14 students who have tested positive for the coronavirus. Volusia County saw an increase in deaths Friday, reporting two additional deaths. Since March, 205 people have died in Volusia County after complications from COVID-19.

For a little more than $150,000, every 11th-grader in Volusia County Schools will be able to take the SAT during the school day in April. Its an initiative that Superintendent Scott Fritz said hed implement this year, and its the first of multiple opportunities for high school students to take the test for free during school. The School Board unanimously approved the $151,938 contract with the College Board.

Volusia County Schools has an achievement gap between white and black, Hispanic and mixed-race students. Gaps in performance exist for Hispanic and mixed-race students too, but the gap between performance for white students and black students is largest. Where almost 70% of white students and 80% of Asian students passed, roughly 40% of black students, 50% of Hispanic students and 60% of mixed-race students passed. But the rate was 10% lower for black students, 9% lower for Hispanic students and 7% lower for mixed-race students. Meanwhile, 32% of out-of-school suspensions were for black students, and black students accounted for 30% of those in classes for children with emotional and behavioral disorders.

Volusia County Schools spent $30,000 on an app that allows parents to track their childs bus in real time. The Volusia County school district purchased the WheresTheBus app for $30,000, so parents can see the location of their childs school bus in real time. The three finalists for the Volusia County Schools superintendent job will be in town for two days of interviews this week, and be available to meet the community on Thursday night. Volusia County Schools is testing a new program that has all kindergarten students at Orange City Elementary eating breakfast right in their classroom, rather than in the cafeteria before school. As the bell rings every morning at Orange City Elementary School, dozens of students may still be in the cafeteria, talking loudly to friends, sipping chocolate milk and eating toast or eggs or one of the other offerings from the School Way Cafe. The Orange City kindergartners are the first in Volusia schools to have breakfast delivered to them in class to eat, instead of served in the cafeteria. The students who dont eat all of the snacks or who get breakfast at home can save them for later. Breakfast in the classroom is expanding to Discovery Elementary on Nov. 12.

PORT ORANGE, Fla. - Spruce Creek High School was temporarily placed on lockdown Friday due to suspicious activity on campus, Volusia County Schools officials said. The lockdown is the second in two days for the high school. A code red lock down -- meaning no one is allowed in or out of the school campus -- was put in place early Friday afternoon, School district officials said. The object was quickly cleared and the lockdown was lifted in under 30 minutes, according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office. Security protocol wasn't followed when a code red wasn't initiated which would have locked down the school, school district officials said.

Volusia County Schools students both beat their own SAT scores in the previous year, and bested Florida's average scores. Not to brag, but Volusia County schools students kicked butt on the SAT last year. The state mean decreased by 15 points, to 999, and the national average decreased by nine points to 1059. On average Volusia students earned 538 on the reading and writing portion and 515 on the math portion, topping the state and national averages in each category. It is part of a new pilot program the Seminole County Public School District is trying at Paul J. Hagerty High School. Lake County Schools will also be using ID badges at their high schools and middle schools too. Dana Schafer, from Osceola County Public Schools, said student ID badges are done at most if not all the high schools in Osceola County. Only the Orange County Public Schools district does not have a policy requiring students to wear ID badges.

Districtwide, elementary students scores on the Florida Standards Assessment went up 1 percent in language arts and down 1 percent in math. Thats down 10% from 2017, and means that the majority of Volusia students are failing those end-of-course exams. Flagler elementary students maintained the same 63% pass rate as last year. And for all students taking the biology end-of-course assessment, 72% of students passed, a 4% jump over last year.

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – Volusia County Schools hosted its first code red drill Thursday to prepare students in the event of an active shooter on campus. A spokesperson for the district said this is the first time Volusia County Schools conducted the Code Red 2 Practice Drill. The district said schools across the county participated in the drill throughout the morning. Before the drill, middle and high school students watched a safety video posted on the school district's website.
