A lockdown at Bethune-Cookman University was prompted by a two threats, including a bomb threat, made by a caller claiming to be affiliated with a neo-Nazi organization, according to the Daytona Beach Police Department.

Bethune-Cookman University president resigns
VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. โ Bethune-Cookman Universityโs president resigned Tuesday, according to the universityโs board of trustees. AdChrite became president of B-CU in July 2019, as the university struggled with financial records. The university was at risk of losing its accreditation in October 2019. Bracy had started an initiative prior to the pandemic, aiming to secure additional funding for Floridaโs HBCUs after leaders at Bethune-Cookman University expressed financial struggles. AdโThe Board of Trustees remains aligned and steadfast in its commitment to its fiduciary responsibilities of care, loyalty, and obedience to the institution,โ the universityโs statement reads.
Curfew in effect as students return to class at Bethune-Cookman University
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. โ A required COVID-19 test and curfew are just a couple of the changes students will see at Bethune-Cookman University. Some of the more than 2,800 students are headed back to the classroom for the first time since October. While students have been learning remotely, the university delayed in-person instruction due to rising cases of COVID-19. Students not inside their residence halls during curfew will be removed from campus housing, according to the university. Overnight sign-out sheets and accommodations are available for students who work during curfew.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. โ Students at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach can soon head back to school. โWhile we are disappointed to have postponed welcoming students back to campus following the holidays, our commitment to maintain the health and safety of our students, faculty and staff mandated the delay,โ said Bethune-Cookman University President E. LaBrent Chrite, Ph.D. โStill, we continued teaching and learning through a robust use of online instruction. Students will be able to return to campus on Thursday, ahead of classes starting on Monday. All students will be tested for the coronavirus upon their return to campus and safety policies, including social distancing, will be mandated, the school said. AdFreshman LaKeria Commer-Willis said sheโs ready to return to campus, though she admits her freshman year is different than she expected.

Daytona Beach names next police chief
VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. โ City officials with Daytona Beach named the next police chief of the city. Jakari Young will be sworn in as the cityโs police chief at 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 6. Young has been the deputy chief of the department since 2017 and has also been a part of the command staff for the past six years. Chief Craig Capri will retire after a 30-year career with the department. City officials say DBPD has an annual budget of $40 million with 256 officers and 60 civilian employees.

Gov. DeSantis says new coronavirus infections not uniform throughout the state
Ron DeSantis said though the number of increasing coronavirus cases could be alarming to some, he said ultimately new infections looked different across the state and are changing how the state responds to the pandemic. This younger demographic is split into different age ranges across the state. I think the new ages range the daily cases like 28 to 33 or something like that, incredibly young. The new statistics bring the total number of coronavirus infections to 158,997 since the virus was first detected in the state on March 1, as well as a total of 3,650 deaths and 14,825 hospitalizations. The state reported a total 3,550 resident deaths and 100 non-resident deaths Wednesday, for a cumulative total of 3,650 deaths.
Florida budget includes increase for historically black colleges
ORLANDO, Fla. Sen. Randolph Bracy (D-Ocoee) praised the resilience of historically black colleges and universities Monday, thanking Floridas governor for increasing funding for the schools in the state budget. Ron DeSantis announced he signed a $92.2 billion budget for the state, slashing $1 billion from the proposed budget lawmakers approved in March. Bethune-Cookman University, Edward Waters College and Florida Memorial University are private schools. This is a commitment you dont usually see for private historically black colleges.The state budget for the fiscal year that begins Wednesday will provide $123.2 million for Floridas HBCUs. Florida A&M University received an increase of $1.3 million, for a total of $92.8 million.
