FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. — Flagler County deputies say they’re having a “ruff” time naming their new K-9 officer, so they’re asking for the community’s help. The new K-9 officer will replace K-9 Keanu, who passed away in February. The naming contest will last a week and the sheriff’s office will announce the new name shortly afterward via its social media accounts. Deputies attempted to arrest Bacon on Thursday after he was recently observed buying a 60-round AK-47 magazine in New Smyrna Beach, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. K-9 Red “quickly tracked Bacon to his hiding spot,” the sheriff’s office said. Bacon was taken into custody and treated for a bite injury at the scene, the sheriff’s office said. A suspect was arrested on Saturday after leading the Daytona Beach Police Department on a chase, which caused one police vehicle to flip over, police said. The police car contained an officer and a K-9, but both are OK, police said. Police said the car crashed and rolled over on Nova Road near Sixth Street in the pursuit of Devonte Smokes, who police eventually arrested in connection with a shooting at an apartment complex on Jean Street on Friday. Teens lead authorities on chase through Volusia County after attempted burglary, police say

According to a news release, Orange City Police Sergeant Jason Ward observed three subjects attempting to break into the store. Once the subjects noticed law enforcement vehicles, they got into a Black Nissan Altima and fled the scene driving southbound on North Volusia Avenue. Orange City Police Officers with the assistance of the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office successfully deployed spike strips near the intersection of Enterprise Road and South Volusia Avenue. The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office set up a perimeter and deployed a police K-9, a news release said. “The investigation also revealed the Nissan Altima was reported stolen out of Orange County on May 18,” officials said.

Local law enforcement agencies prepared to give K-9s Narcan

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – The state's opioid epidemic is affecting more than drug users, it's putting law enforcement and their K-9 partners at risk. Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood says all of his k-9 handlers are equipped with Narcan. Last year while raiding a suspected drug dealers home, three Broward County K-9s were rushed to veterinarians after ingesting a potentially deadly mix of heroin mixed with fentenyl. "If its gonna save a human life, why not save one of our k-9 partners as well." Now when put themselves in harms way to protect their community, their handlers will have a way to protect them.

Universal reopens parking garage after investigation

ORLANDO, Fla. – Park officials say an all-clear has been given after guest traffic into a Universal Orlando parking garage was stopped on Monday afternoon. Park officials said the K-9 noticed something during a routine patrol and they notified the Orlando Police Department and Orlando Fire Department out of an abundance of caution. Authorities asked Universal to stop guest traffic into the south parking garage. The investigation is not affecting other park operations and no evacuations were ordered, officials said. "We are working to take care of any guests who may be temporarily inconvenienced," park officials said in an email to News 6.
