Melbourne police said officers arrested 67-year-old Gary Lane at his home in Melbourne Beach. Lane is facing several charges: Leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury, reckless driving with serious bodily injury, leaving the scene of a crash involving property damage and reckless driving involving property damage. Lane is accused of leaving the scene, according to police.
Beachcomber finds 6-foot-long shark washed up on Melbourne Beach
It was not the sort of thing the onetime surfer expected to see on her daily morning walk along Melbourne Beach. There, not far from the shoreline, Betty Gardner Gonzalez spotted the dead shark in the sand just before sunrise Monday, News 6 partner Florida Today reported. “I walk every morning on the beach and just came across it. The shark, possibly a sand tiger shark or one of the ragged-tooth variety, was about 6 feet long. Gonzalez had planned to contact the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission about the discovery.
Shark attacks surfer off Melbourne Beach
MELBOURNE BEACH, Fla. – A man was attacked by a “toothy sea creature” while surfing Tuesday morning off Melbourne Beach, according to officials. The attack happened around 8:15 a.m. near the 7400 block of State Road A1A in the Sunnyland Beach community. The 25-year-old victim was taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center with an arm injury, according to Brevard County Fire Rescue. Officials said the man suffered “significant bleeding.”“It was severe enough that they thought he needed specialized attention at a trauma center,” Fire Chief Mark Schollmeyer said. Firefighters said the surfer was fortunate to be right across the street from the last fire station in the county before Sebastian Inlet.
Experimental plane crashes on Melbourne Beach, injuring 1
MELBOURNE BEACH, Fla. – An experimental aircraft crashed Friday morning on Melbourne Beach, officials said. The Sheriff’s Office said the pilot took off from the airport in Valkaria and the engine died before he tried landing on the beach. Emergency responders reported the plane had about 20 gallons of fuel but none of it leaked onto the beach after crashing. Melbourne Beach resident Rick O’Connor took pictures of the upside down plane. “It’s pretty amazing, sent it up to my grandchildren, show them what I found on the beach today,” O’Connor said.

Video: 3 giant sawfish spotted in Indian River in Melbourne Beach
MELBOURNE BEACH, Fla. – With fewer people out enjoying Florida’s water, some sea creatures you don’t see too often have been spotted in local waterways. Three giant smalltooth sawfish were captured on video next to a dock in the shallow water in the Indian River in Melbourne Beach. Alavarez said, “Got to witness something amazing this morning in Melbourne Beach in the Indian River. The FWC says sawfish sightings are now less common because they were unintentionally over fished. Alavrez reported the sighting to the FWC so the agency can better understand which areas the sawfish are in.
Brevard Zoo to release rehabilitated sea turtle
MELBOURNE, Fla. – After a stay at the Brevard Zoo’s Sea Turtle Healing Center, a juvenile green sea turtle named Kona will be returned to the ocean at Bonsteel Park in Melbourne Beach on Tuesday. Kona will make his way back to the big old blue at 4 p.m. through a partnership with the Barrier Island Center. Kona arrived at the healing center April 7.
