Authorities with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said a canoe with a man and woman were on the St. Johns River near State Road 40 in Astor and their boat capsized at around 2:30 p.m. Neighbors told News 6 they got into their boats and went out on the water to help rescue the two when they heard cries for help from the river. The FWC said the woman was able to swim until she was brought to shore by a good samaritan. Crews from Florida Fish and Wildlife, Lake County deputies as well as Fire & Rescue, and Volusia County Deputies were on hand for the search, which ended when the man’s body was found a little before 8:30 p.m.FWC officials later identified the man as Francisco Gomez Sergio, 58.
